Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

why did Sierra bother to record samples for this game (like when Roger's saying "Where am I?" in the intro), but never released it with a driver that actually enables the game to play them? If I'm not mistaken, the original floppy version came without an SB driver at all, and the copy in the SQ …

Re: Getting my AWE64 working in pure DOS mode

in DOS
As recently discussed on another thread, the Creative install program for the DOS drivers will detect a Windows installation even if it isn't running, and will abort. Someone mentioned that you can get the drivers and utilities individually and make them work, though.

Re: doxbox ruined my pc!

There are ways to repair the MBR, but I don't know what they are off the top of my head. Some Google searching will probably turn up some info though. It also may be a good idea to see what the partition table looks like using Partition Magic, Norton Ghost, fdisk, or some other tool.

Re: doxbox ruined my pc!

DOSBox does not modify any of your computer's settings or even integrate itself into Windows. It sounds more likely to be a hardware failure, virus infection, or freak accident. Is your BIOS able to detect your hard drive?

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

California Games sets the 16-color composite mode entirely without using the BIOS, which means it will stay in text mode on a VGA. I remember seeing this on a few old games on my 286, which had an EGA card. It would be obvious that the game was supposed to be graphical, but it would be running in …

Re: Buck's new semi-old-school-rig

What OS do you have on it? What kinds of storage devices (e.g. hard drives) does it have, and what are their speeds/capacities? A PIII-500 is plenty fast for the era of games you're interested in. I had a PII-450 for years and ran all sorts of great games on it up until around 3 years ago. Some of …

Re: Final Fantasy VII (FF7) PC (Windows)

in Windows
From what I've read, that "Ultima Edition" is total crap. I'd highly recommend staying away from it. Unfortunately it's all over the place now, so people are asking about it everywhere (by the way, don't come to VOGONS asking for help with it!).

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Between the PC (3), XT/ Portable (3), PCjr.(1), AT (3), Convertible (1) and XT 286 (1) there are ten BIOSes. I would prefer an emulator that emulated each systematically rather than the aptly named MESS. I would want an emulator that would allow you to configure the Floppy Disks, Hard Disks, RAM, …
