D-Fend is definitely the most popular frontend. I've been thinking that it might be good to have a DOSBox frontends forum here on VOGONS anyways, and now it looks like there might be an even better reason for having one.

...which is why I mentioned same-resolution comparison between fullscreen and windowed mode. It's misleading to say that fullscreen is faster than windowed if you're not trying to make all controllable factors equal before doing a comparison.

Are you saying that the individual driver files are different sizes, or are you referring to the total package size? If it's the latter then there's no surprise that the size is different, as he's probably using a totally different installation system. He also bundles ATI Tray Tools and Radlinker …

If the game requires a CD, then you need to mount one. If you don't have one, then you'll need to find a crack or something to disable the CD check (but note that it is against forum rules to ask where to get one).

Space Quest 3 doesn't support General MIDI, unless you're listening to a remix from Quest Studios or something... About the trumpets: I guess I'm not sure what bothers you, except that the style in which the trumpet notes are being played doesn't sound very realistic. I'm not sure how it would be …

What do you mean you can't play them with MIDI sound? Almost all of the DOS-based Sierra games supported either MT-32 or General MIDI as their highest-quality music output. Sierra games are probably half of the reason I bought my own MT-32 and Sound Canvas synths! Adlib/Soundblaster music is crap …

The reason the Descent ports exist is that the original developers released the source code for anyone to look at and tinker with. The vast majority of games never have their source code released to the public.
