Re: Metal Gear Solid PC

in Windows
Hmm that program looks pretty complicated. The emulate DirectX 8.1 caps might be a good option to try, along with setting the device ID to a Radeon 9800 Pro (since it's listed and we know it works)

Re: doom on XP

in DOS
I really doubt that old versions of DirectX will work with new versions of Windows and/or new video cards, as both Windows and the video card drivers assume that you're running a fairly recent version of DirectX and will probably go bonkers even if you could get it to install. The directx.cpl trick …

Re: Metal Gear Solid PC

in Windows
Yeah, unfortunately it looks like you may be out of luck. You could maybe buy an old PCI video card for around #30 that's compatable with the game, but that's probably a bit extreme.

Re: Metal Gear Solid PC

Just install it (and maybe reboot for good measure), then try running MGS again. I think it applies its settings automatically for applications it knows about.

Re: Sudden slowdown

CVS versions are actually newer than DOSBox 0.63. Check the development forum for more info. Look in the dosbox.conf for info on the core= and output= settings. Also, it may be worth running a virus and spyware scan if you haven't lately...

Re: Need For Speed III - Hot Pursuit 2

Unfortunately, the only NFS games I have are NFS: High Stakes and NFS Underground 2. There are a couple of NFS3:HP2 patches at dlh.net that you should try: http://dlh.net/cgi-bin/dp.cgi?lang=eng&ref=&sys=&cap=n I've also searched Google and found a "v242 patch", but it doesn't mention any graphics …

I haven't tried that port yet, but my guess is that back in the day you had only a Soundblaster or Adlib card and now you have Windows with its better software wavetable MIDI synthesizers. If this is the case then there's no way to hear the music the way it used to sound, unless someone adds an …

Re: No sound in Linux

You could try messing around with the device= setting in your dosbox.conf. I think DOSBox supports several different Linux sound driver packages, so you may need to either make sure it's using one that you have, or install whichever one it's trying to use. Do you get any sound-related messages when …

Re: Discworld 2: no disc detected

in DOS
Maybe it's poorly cracked. Try putting a CD in your CD drive if you're running in XP DOS. In DOSBox, try mounting a directory as a CD-ROM: mount d c:\windows\temp -t cdrom I'd also check to see if there's a readme included by whoever packaged it. Also, I'm pretty sure the Underdogs version doesn't …

Re: Metal Gear Solid PC

Yeah the PSX version uses some hard-to-emulate sound features. I'd recommend checking out Pete's SPU plugins. It sounds to me like nVidia isn't doing as good a job as ATI of maintaining compatability with older versions of Direct3D. You could try playing with your video acceleration slider (Display …
