New...version? VDMSound is dead (long live VDMSound). Just because yours is the only (visible) account on your system doesn't mean it has administrator access. Check your account properties in the control panel and see if it shows you as an administrator or just a regular user.

There was a CD-ROM version of Castles II? I only ever played the floppy version, which had a ton of floppies due to those cool little movies that it plays during the game.

I'm not sure, but I think they may have lied on the box, gambling that they were going to have mouse support before initial release (which didn't happen). I could be wrong though. 1. What version of DOSBox are you using? 2. Have you tried changing the cycles setting? (maybe it needs to be higher?) 3. Have you tried different core settings? (simple, normal, full, dynamic)

Not to get too off-topic, but I've never ever had a virus scanner be able to clean the virus from an infected file (except by removing the file).

1GB is plenty if you just run games and other apps. The only reason I could think of to have more is if you're doing server stuff.

Have you tried finding updated drivers for the sound, video, and motherboard chipset hardware on the laptop? Also make sure that you aren't running in 15-bit color.

It's worth a try, although I think F2B is strictly an 8-bit (256 color) application.
