Re: VGA Digital Output

What a marvellous idea - you are absolutely right. Snoop the palette somehow and get pixel and sync data from feature connector. If it does not exist, let's build one. There's just a few issues that might need some more thought. While you get pixel clock, H/V sync and blank signals from the …

Re: PCM Y cable

My guess : no sound. The receiver would not be able to see valid SPDIF stream. Much like you can't split/mix any other ports like RS232, LPT, USB, VGA or Ethernet ports between three devices with a Y cable.

Re: Tseng labs ET4000AX - no color = problem

And I should have been more clear how to mod the cable - My intention was to just cut open the outer plastic of the cable so that you can access all the wires inside the cable, and then cut a wire instead of connector pin. That way you could later on connect the wire again if it was the wrong wire. …

Re: 3dfx bars

The reason might be different timing from the 2D card and 3D card so the monitor can't use same stored settings for displaying both cards properly. What resolution the game uses, and what resolution the monitor reports? (hint: some monitors can be switched between 640 and 720 pixel wide modes for …

Re: Tseng labs ET4000AX - no color = problem

Edit: You can modify the card to be compatible with modern monitors. You can modify modern monitors to be compatible with your card. But it will most likely be easier to just modify an unused VGA cable between card and monitor to make them compatible with each other. So, you don't need to modify the …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

While some power can be sourced from parallel ports for some applications, in general, I think there's a lot of incompatibilities when doing so. For instance, when powering some SPI EEPROM or small microcontroller for parallel port "dongle" for software activation, at least there you have a specific …

Re: Cirrus Logic gd5424 textmode issue

The card is so integrated there's no component that would only affect text mode, and there's a lot of unanswered questions. If it was an hardware error, it should affect graphics modes as well - except if font area of BIOS ROM does not work.. ISA or VLB card? Is there a "wait state" jumper? Does it …

Re: Games with dual OPL2 support for stereo FM?

in Milliways
Hmmm.. a lot of excellent programmers Vogons has.. Maybe a small TSR that reroutes Dual-OPL2 to OPL3 will be a good idea? Maybe. One OPL3 does not have two rhythm banks like dual OPL2 has, so at least that would not work. Some games also write register indexes to both chips, wait, and then write …

Re: Games with dual OPL2 support for stereo FM?

in Milliways
OPL3 PAS (PAS16?) seems to have OPL3 bank0 at 0x388/0x389 and bank1 at 0x38A/0x38B, as in OPL3 SBs. Is that true? On my SB Pro 2.0, I initially tried a replay routine for VGM with those addresses, and it didn't work correctly. It seems only 0x388/0x389 map to bank 0, and bank 1 was not accessible. …

Re: CVX-2 : covox adapter

- anyone correct me if I am wrong - but we determined the original uses 100K 0.1% resistor ladder with a divider at the end and no filter capacitor (maybe the covox speaker have it onboard, maybe not). I will clarify a bit; yes the ladder is made with 100K and 200K resistances and there is a 25K …

Re: SBPro (CT1330A) + LAPC-I, Best System for em?

As others said, the SBPro CT1330 is very sensitive to clock speed just like SB1.x and SB2.0 or other OPL2 (YM3812) cards. A Socket 7 will not do even with both caches disabled because the clock itself is still high which confuses the YM3812. 486 is the fastest system you would want to put a SB1.0- …

Re: Dune "HERAD" Ad Lib Music Hacking

in DOS
Timer rate in the plugin code is based on the tempo, so it is not identical to original code. The frequency measures ticks per second, so for example, if frequency is equal to 1 Hz, then it will play each MIDI tick one time per second. OK. I am just interested if there is any reason it's played …

Re: Dune "HERAD" Ad Lib Music Hacking

in DOS
I don't think things like BPM are any more meaningful since this is not a standard MIDI file we are playing. Different (DOS) players will anyway use different timer interrupt rates to play standard midi files at the tempo set in the MIDI file. The timer rate can be fixed or even change based on …

Re: Dune "HERAD" Ad Lib Music Hacking

in DOS
Not sure what is really meant with that timer/tempo value, but will the following help with tempo calculation? The game sets PIT timer divisor to 5957, which amounts to about 200.299 Hz timer interrupt. My wild guess is the music playing routine is also called from this timer interrupt like on Dune. …
