Maybe it's just spontaneous hardware failure – though I would have thought running the program in software mode would have solved that problem. Were you regularly playing such demanding games on this computer before? Are other games still running correctly?

Note that there are at least two different DOS drivers: SBINIT.COM and SBEINIT.COM. No idea what exactly the difference is between them. (It could just be the name.)

There was a Miles driver which could be swapped in for games that were using different Miles drivers. I remember doing that for SimFarm – though that may have been AWE64.
