Re: DIR differences

Whatever you choose, I'm pretty sure you just need to run COMMAND.COM (or 4DOS.COM or whatever) directly; you don't need to mess with COMSPEC. The major downside to using 4DOS or any other kind of command.com is that I don't think you will be able to use DOSBox commands like "mount" until you exit. …

Re: Can't get music in Cold Shadow to work (CD music)

in Windows
Since the standard, default cd-rom drive should be "D:" maybe most old games look under D: by default. No, they don't. There was never any kind of standard, unofficial or otherwise, that assumed the CD-ROM drive would be "D:". (I'm sure there's probably at least one very badly-coded game that …

Re: Can't get music in Cold Shadow to work (CD music)

in Windows
Many old CD-ROM games did not expect systems to have more than one CD-ROM drive. When you get no music, it is probably because the game is trying to play music from the wrong drive. (I'm not entirely sure what the drive letter setting in Multimedia Properties is supposed to do.) I think there's some …

Re: Can't get music in Cold Shadow to work (CD music)

in Windows
I only have one physical DVD drive and a virtual one with MagicISO on both 98 and XP (I also have the virtual drive here on 7 aswell, but that doesn't really matter as CD audio works differently with SATA drives). Okay, so what if you disable the virtual drive? I have no idea what that WDM and VxD …

Re: Can't get music in Cold Shadow to work (CD music)

in Windows
Are you sure you're using the WDM drivers and not the VxD drivers? What makes you think you have the "same drivers" in XP and 98? You should also probably check the CD volume. Can you get CD music from any other program in Windows 98? The Windows 98 CD player is a good test. As noted above, Windows …

Re: Enclave definitive fix?

in Windows
My laptop processor is a dual core one, so I can say: affinity isn't the problem. I don't think that follows. It's always possible that Windows 10 simply includes a new compatibility fix specifically for this problem. The only way to really establish that affinity isn't the problem is to set the …

Re: DVD drive keeps ejecting

in Milliways
I managed to sort-of fix one with that problem, many years ago. Once I managed to get the drive opened up I found one tiny gear that was slightly cracked and not properly engaged with its spindle. With considerable good fortune, I managed to find exactly the right replacement gear from someone on an …

Re: Enclave definitive fix?

in Windows
I would have thought that if the problem was so completely straightfoward to diagnose that someone would have found a solution already. I tried a Google search for , which turns up https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ee417693%28v=vs.85%29.aspx , but that only suggests setting …

Re: DOS 6.22 / Windows 95 dual boot.

in Milliways
Has anyone confirmed on the dual boot of 6.22 and Win95 on the same hard drive without a boot utility? People have only been doing that for the last twenty years. Is the Win95 upgrade required? Maybe? Someone linked to https://rubenerd.com/dual-boot-windows-31-95/ earlier in the thread, which seems …
