Re: Thoughts on Emulating BBS Door Games with Node.js?

in Milliways
I'm pretty sure there already exists software out there that can "emulate" a door interface one way or another. The details escape me. A dedicated computer running BBS software is still needed It doesn't really have to be "dedicated" anymore, does it? It seems to me that a worthy idea would be to …

Re: How many use linux?

That's actually not all that surprising - it isn't so much the BD-J support that's the "gotcha" as it is that Blu-ray/HD-DVD require AACS which doesn't exist (at least legally) as a freeware component. There's greymarket applications/work-arounds that can extract the audio/video content from a disc …

is there a program he could run to detect the irq/dma his card uses There's the SETBLAST.EXE utility discussed at http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=37876 . I have attached a copy from the shareware episode of Blake Stone available at http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Blake_Stone%3A_Aliens …

Re: How to slow down a windows 98 computer for slower games?

Try a Rage 128. I currently use a Rage 128 VR 32MB PCI card on my piledriver AM3+ setup, and it throttles games that run too fast. By that do you mean that it makes demanding games run more slowly..? Do you have some basis for suggesting that it will slow down DOS games written years before the …

I remember right so does Windows 8 Pro. Nope. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2403983,00.asp (I have probably a dozen copies of CyberlinkDVD from graphics cards, and I don't remember an OEM system from back then that didn't include either Cyberlink or Intervideo to handle DVD playback - some …

Re: Question about HIMEM.SYS and EMM386

in DOS
I have an old DOS program that is not a game. It is a fantastic modeling package that I would very much like to use again. The last time it was usable was on Win NT (at least on the computers I have had). Can someone offer a simple how-to set of steps to enable me to use it on my Win 8.1 machine? …

Don't know what celeron your running, so it maybe already at 66mhz FSB. Most Pentium II\III era celerons are. That is anyway, until you get to the Tualatin based celerons. It could be a Northwood Celeron for all we know at this point. i can ask the person who build the computer what type of …

Re: How many use linux?

Oh, hardly. Just as there are abundant DVD playing solutions for Linux, Windows will happily play DVDs for free using VLC or ffdshow or suchlike. Of course, you have to know where to find them, but then you'd also have to know where to find libdvdcss2.

Re: Screeching when running DosBox

The " talking parrot " fix springs to mind, but that's probably not quite related. I don't know how that is related indeed, all I remember of it was a creepy demo with an EGA-drawn parrot that keeps talking XD I mean, at the time I think there might have been a change committed to the DOSBox source …

Re: Screeching when running DosBox

Have you tried a very old version of DOSBox, like 0.60 or something? Perhaps if the sound is missing from the oldest version of DOSBox you can find, you can slowly work your way up to the current version and see if it might be associated with the introduction of a particular feature. The " talking …
