Nahkri wrote: Afaik the 32gb limitation is caused by the fat32 file system not by the os That is indeed an artificial limitation imposed by Windows 2K/XP and later. It's not just a matter of wasted space; NTFS is more efficient on larger drives, according to MS. See http://toastytech.com/guis/ …

But doesn't that mean you should still be able to extract those IE-less versions of explorer.exe, etc. from a Windows 95C installation disc? I have never read of someone suggesting that. You should still be able to. I'm just mentioning that it's possible to avert the trainwreck that is the …

The free version of the aforementioned 98lite will still let you replace the shell with the shell from the original Windows 95 release, but more advanced features require the registered version. Even if you used Windows 95C you can abort the first-time IE4 install process on the second time you run …

But I was also surprised to discover the number of things that would not work....the version of POV-Ray I has been using would not run, nor Nero, nor the "later" versions of Widows Media Player I have grown accustomed to using. That's odd. Are you using the original version of Windows 95 without …

Re: Windows 95 and Dosbox

You're welcome. But I am curious as to what problem you are experiencing that is due to an incompatible installer and that also cannot be remedied by the instructions at http://www.reactos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=90351 . Is it some proprietary installer? Are you sure the game will run under XP …

Re: Windows 95 and Dosbox

There are numerous things that DOSBox simply does not emulate properly if you are not booting some version of DOS from a disk image, as detailed in the guide . There are a couple of games that will complain similarly. There has been some unofficial work done on adding proper IDE emulation to DOSBox …

Re: Windows 95 and Dosbox

(It is the installer for the game that is incompatible with XP not the game.) This is not a problem you should be trying to fix with DOSBox. Incompatible installer problems can likely be remedied with the instructions at http://www.reactos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=90351 . Otherwise, you should use …

The alternative to the Catweasel is the USB Kryoflux. It may also be worth investigating "floppy drive emulators" that read floppy images off of SD cards, but those aren't too helpful if you are looking to image disks to begin with.

It seems like it's been a long time since I've heard about any virus activity. Malware and spyware seem to be where it's at these days. (An unpatched Windows XP or Windows 2000 installation may still susceptible to spontaneous infection, though.) By the time MSE stops being supported on XP, I might …

If a clueless user is trying to install a known piece of spyware or malware or something else that is just plain buggy and system-destroying, then in theory it will have no certificate (or a revoked certificate) and Microsoft can stop the clueless user from installing it. I think the same thing …

The program scans everything you download and install, and reports it back to Microsoft in order to verify that the app has a legitimate certificate. [...] It turns out that the protocol Microsoft uses to communicate this information is widely known to be extremely vulnerable to interception. For …

I would like to know why isnt installation of modern HTML and Flash possible on Win 98/etc. Anything is possible . It is a question of whether anyone can be bothered to create something like that for a 15-year-old operating system that is not frequently used anymore. The inherent 512 MB RAM …

Knowing how Micro$oft is integrating more and more things that can be abused to spy on people Since when? I have the impression that "things that can be abused to spy on people" have a much greater tendency to pop up on the other end of one's Internet connection these days. If privacy is a great …
