Re: Networking Help - Windows 7 x64 -> Win98SE

Norton Commander wrote: I don't know if Slax can access Fat32 partitions, maybe someone else here can advise or recommend a suitable bootable linux distro that can. You'd have to look pretty hard to find something that doesn't support FAT32, especially on a Live CD. (NTFS might be a slightly …

Since you already mentioned that the transfer speeds between your Win 7 desktop and Win 7 laptop give same slow speeds I think it's safe to rule out Win 98 machines for now. He said exactly the opposite: Sorry - I got the same slow result from both windows 7 machines to the three Windows 98SE boxes …

In theory there was a problem last year due to the flooding in the area where most of the factories were located, causing a shortage in supply and thus higher prices, but I'm not sure if the effect of that was exaggerated.

Re: CD/DVD backups

The other problem with CD/DVDs is that it's so difficult to figure out where you put everything. Before my old hard drive crashed I actually considered copying all the stuff on my old backup CDs back to my gigantic external hard drive so there would actually be a chance I could find it again. Of …

Oh, yes, whenever I burn a DVD, I always make an MD5 file of everything I'm burning first, and then check the MD5 sums afterwards. Bit of a chore, really.

Re: CD/DVD backups

I wish DL DVDs were cheaper; 4 GB of space just doesn't cut it with 100+ GB drives. These days I usually just copy everything from one drive to another external drive, but I had a crash a while ago (and lost some unique stuff I foolishly stored alongside my backups) and it's made me feel nervous.

Yes, something like that. The big "blob" in the middle is the important part. (While you can buy USB-A-to-USB-A male-male cables, they are completely nonstandard and might even damage your USB ports.) I'm not sure if Windows 7 includes anything, but these cables also require their own independent …

Darn - was hoping for an easy win - a known issue with simple fix. I guess I expect to much when there's so many years between the operating systems. :) But if it was an operating system compatibility problem, SFTP would work. It might still come down to the networking hardware you're using in your …
