Re: Rescuing an old HD

in DOS
an old DOS 5.1 machine There is no DOS 5.1. The DOS box has no disk drive or network, so it has to be by serial cable. It took me a couple of days to realize that DosBox + interlnk/intersvr won't work. And another few agonizing days of Putty and System.IO.Ports.SerialPort to understand that The …

Re: Any interest in a MS Windows Security Update CD?

in Milliways
I have one of those too. I was debating whether to put it up on eBay. (After all, it says "Not For Resale" on it.) Indeed, folks have picked it apart and there is little reason I can see why not to go with one of the unofficial Service Packs when it comes to Win9x.

Re: Know any good ms-dos GUIs?

in DOS
Come to think of it, DISPLAY also has some pretty good file-management capabilities, in addition to being a versatile image (and movie!) viewer. It's available at http://www.resoo.org/docs/dos/free_software/graphics.htm . Not really a GUI, technically, but it's free, at least.

Re: Gone Fishin'

Instead of saying you tried everything, could you perhaps say exactly what you're trying now? If you are mounting the game's directory as C:\ instead of the game's parent directory (i.e. C:\whatever\GONEFISH instead of C:\whatever), that could very well be the problem. If all else fails, you can use …

Re: Any millionaires around?

I recall that Intel apparently sold off its defective Pentium chips as jewelry back in the day. So, there's an option. After all, people are making money selling wristbands with magical "energy" holograms on them, apparently. But as the description suggests, there could very well be some wacky Super …

Re: Need help replacing "screeching" hard drive

Indeed, logical partitions can't be set as Active. (Not normally, anyway, and they're certainly not supposed to be.) I suppose if you really want to, you can back up your MBR (somehow?) and then use "sys c:" on the hard drive from an ME boot floppy. You won't be able to get back into XP until you …

I get the same boot screen from WinXP, so I'm given the option to boot to WinXP or WinME. XP boots fine, ME gives me a system disk not present error and if I press enter it restarts the boot process. What bugs me is that the ME partition is Primary and the XP one is Logical and this is how it was …

Re: dBASE II dbase.com does not run (?)

Did you install the application from its original disks? If not, and you are not mounting the directories in a way that matches its original installation, that might be the problem. And of course if all you have is dbase.com and dbaseovr.com , you're probably missing a bunch of support files. Also, …

Re: Why emulate? just why?

Life is short, there are a lot of games to play, and for some people actually playing the games is substantially more fun than mucking about in flea markets for hardware that may or may not work. That is why people emulate.
