Re: Rotational controller for games?

in Milliways
This came up in a Google search: a do-it-yourself guide using a cannibalized mouse. http://arcadecontrols.com/files/Miscellaneous/spinner.pdf But there are lots of hits for , and as I said, it seems some people have indeed used an Atari 2600 paddle controller via a USB adapter.

Re: Did you guys know about these?

in Milliways
...Really, is there some reason you can't just put "Champ-Em" in your subject line instead of "these" ? Yes, because the word "these" makes people curious to see what the thread is about. But if you used "Champ-em" instead of "these", people could satisfy their curiosity by looking at the index and …

Re: Rotational controller for games?

in Milliways
I believe these are more frequently called "paddle" controllers. They were well known on the Atari 2600; most recently, I had an N64 "racing" controller that was quite similar. Either of those options would require an adapter of some sort, of course.

...Really, is there some reason you can't just put "Champ-Em" in your subject line instead of "these" ? And sure, I remember them. I don't think arcade emulation was quite as feasible then as it is now; there also seem to be many more ways to hook up old digital joysticks nowadays.

Re: Know any good ms-dos GUIs?

in DOS
MS-DOS 6.2 Dosshell will do the job. MS-DOS 6.2 actually didn't include the MS-DOS 5 dosshell; it had to be added separately. (You can get it from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/135315 via olddos.exe .) Aside from Norton Commander, Norton Desktop for DOS is pretty nice. Wikipedia calls Norton …

Re: Which OS?

Update: Okay, so Windows 3.11 does NOT run on FreeDOS whatsoever, ugh. :depressed: Are you sure? Perhaps you started reading http://www.freedos.org/freedos/news/technote/200.html but did not scroll down to the Update at the very bottom? (Seriously, I did that at least once myself. The FreeDOS …

Re: Questions on getting started with tracker music

in Milliways
In the end, it's really just something like MIDI music with custom instrument samples, I understand. Offhand, everyone seems to like FL Studio (formerly FruityLoops) for that sort of thing. That's expensive, but there's a demo available, I think. Otherwise, ModPlug Tracker springs to mind. Seems …

Re: 256MB XMS

Ooh, this looks like fun. In 1995, high-end gaming was limited to SGI Workstations where games like BZFlag were played on $10,000 computers with Intergraph hardware using IrixGL. They didn't use 128mb ram, either. I was about to ask if there were in fact 486 chipsets in 1995 that could contain 128 …

Re: pclinux

in Milliways
Thanks for all the feedback here. I wasn't really looking for advice, just trying to start a general discussion. I actually like PCLinux, I have had better luck with it than any other version I've ever tried. Everything actually works - internet, sound. etc... So, do you in fact have a swap …

Re: Best games and application software for 486 dx2-66 era PC?

in DOS
As far as video editing, no, of course I wouldn't do that on a system like that, if I tried at all it would be a technical exercise to see if it was even possible. At the time, professionals probably had ultra high-end workstations for that kind of thing, when they weren't just working with analog …
