It looks like the program seems to equate the 486@8Mhz to be slightly slower than the 386DX40. But what would happen if cache was turned off and/or the turbo was off at that speed? Is it possible to slow the machine down to AT (286/8) speeds in hardware? I don't know how the Speedsys processor …

Theoretically it should work as long as you prevent the card from touching the AWE64 underneath and watch out for heat problems. I'm not so sure about that particular IDE controller though, as it is a PCI v2.2 card, the board doesn't support that.

This is my 486 at 8 MHz. The board is a PVI-486SP3 (SIS 496/497) with the turbo still on. Turning the turbo off is not as effective as either disabling the cache or running the system at 8 MHz, so it has to be the waitstates method.

Everest is probably only showing normalized values instead of raw data. In this case, a value of 100 would mean no reallocated sectors, 36 would be the point when the disk is about to run out of space for reallocated sectors, and 1 would be near the worst possible value.

I have two identical 3c905c-tx-m "Made in Ireland". One is in my 486, the other in my Athlon box. Both tolerate a 40 MHz PCI clock. There is just one problem with these: They have an awful SMD-mounted RJ45 jack which tends to break if not handled with care.

YMMV, of course. 😉 After all, I only tested about five cards until I found one that worked on the overclocked bus, and there are a lot of 3c905 variants.

Realtek 8029, 8139 and older 3Com 3c905 caused trouble on my 40 MHz bus, but I found that later 3Com cards (3c905c, those with the small PCB) work fine so far.

The latest version of UniVBE doesn't support Geforce cards (See here for a list of supported chips). IMO the easiest way out of this is installing a S3 Trio/Virge. 😉

Just noticed on the photo that your board doesn't have a voltage converter (see the silkscreened rectangles just east of the CPU socket), which means it runs all CPUs with 5V. So be careful and only try "cheap" CPUs.

According to the data sheet (available here) this mouse only works on USB ports. I'm afraid you'll have to look for a model which specifically supports operation on PS/2 ports.

The BIOS display may be wrong, after all this is quite an oddball CPU. Check with a software utility (wcpuid, chkcpu). To be honest, I wouldn't bother with stock speed and just jumper it to 6x100. 😉
