It depends on the chipset, but many 486 boards with 256K cache will cover up to - 32 MB if the L2 cache is in write-back mode. - 64 MB if the L2 cache is in write-through mode.

Maybe it lacks the necessary amount of TAG RAM to cover more than 64 MB. One some boards this is upgradeable.

My Voodoo3 3000 died after a few years of use. It was built into a silent PC, so the air flow was not very good, and I remember burning my fingers on the heatsink several times. The Voodoo 3 heatsinks seem a bit weedy to be operated without fans.

Dans Datas massive cooler comparison page has eight of the Thermaltake Orbs. Once I was given a Thermaltake Dragon Orb 3 with the 7000 RPM fan. For the weight, looks and noise of the thing I expected it to perform much better than a standard aluminium heatsink, but it really didn't.

You're probably right about contact problems causing the corrupt screens, try to reseat those two socketed RAM chips. My Cirrus Logic VLB card had exactly the same issue.

Most of Creative's ISA cards have a PC speaker connector. It has a few problems though: The input volume is too loud and the mixer chip has only four settings to control the volume (0/33/66/100%). Also, connecting the mainboard speaker output to the sound card introduces a great deal of noise.

After reading your post the second time, your monitor may not be the culprit after all... Those utilities you use for setting the refresh rate are for DOS, right? Windows 3.11 video drivers usually don't care for these settings, they may even work erratically if the video card is not in the default …

The output signal of your VGA cards may not be optimal indeed, but the main problem is most probably the LCD monitor. Do you have another monitor to test?

Judging by the release date of the beta BIOS, I reckon it is the same as the older one, only with a Y2K patch applied.

Don't forget the onboard sound on the EP-8KTA3. I cannot remember much about its sound quality (haven't tried it in years), but if you enable the resources for it in the BIOS setup, it emulates a SB Pro. It is at least accurate enough to fool Win98, which automatically installs SB Pro drivers. 😉

Your results are still impressive, considering that this mainboard was only designed to support Athlon Thunderbirds up to 1.4 GHz.

50 MHz extra on a 2.4V K6 is quite a challenge. :wink: The 2.2V parts fare a bit better, and the + versions are good for 100 - 150 MHz more. The depressing thing is that overclocking these chips won't do much for game performance. Even with a K6-3 at 600 MHz, a Celeron 300A @ 450 MHz would run …

On the old 2.4V K6-IIIs removing the heatspreader and mounting a Socket A heatsink helped a lot to improve temperatures. Unfortunately the CPU was hopeless for overclocking.

Nice work! Too bad the board didn't live up to expectations, but the lack of a PCI divider makes running a FSB clock above 40 MHz very difficult.
