Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Incidentally, running the game without the switch will cause a crush sooner or later I wasn't aware of such power. Well, it says so on spacequest.net and I also witnessed it myself - if I started the game without the -N switch, sooner or later it asked for a missing 992.V56 or 993.V56 file. It's …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

SQ6 doesn't have a manual copy protection. You do need it to be able to solve the homing beacon puzzle, but that wasn't intended to be a copy protection measure. Edit: Oh wait, it does. I forgot about the periodic table of elements thing. Well, if the manual is required to solve a puzzle, that's a …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

I also notice that the issue with King's Quest in Tandy mode (text on the opening scroll being serrated) has been fixed. Good work. That's right. Another thing that was fixed was the SQ3 hangup when it's set to use the Tandy DAC, but did they just fix the hangup, and it's now like in MESS, or …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Can you tell me what exactly did you change in MESSUI.INI to achieve this effect? I don't know what messui.ini setting it would be; in the macmess gui though I click on the options button, and there are several choices under renderer; software or opengl, and a checkbox for "smoothing", etc...I …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

That spellcaster widescreen issue may be because the games are running in something like 640x200 and you don't have aspect-correct stretching enabled. Well, I checked DOSBOX.CONF and the only thing that seems similar to what you offered is the 'aspect' parameter. I changed that to aspect=true but …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

o, perhaps if you'll use CGA320C.DRV from later versions of KQ4SCI, v1.000.111 will also look like other SCI games look with this driver? Well, just try it... I did, and apparently it does work - when I replaced v1.000.111's CGA320C.DRV with v1.006.003's, the familiar white/red/cyan palette of …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

o, perhaps if you'll use CGA320C.DRV from later versions of KQ4SCI, v1.000.111 will also look like other SCI games look with this driver? Well, just try it... Gladly, just tell me where to get this specific version. By the way, your timer-bug patch for SQ1VGA contains SNDBLAST.DRV, and if I'm not …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

It's also possible that you had your Sound Blaster set to IRQ 5; SQ3's SNDBLAST.DRV only works with IRQ 7. I don't have SQ3's original SNDBLAST.DRV, but I used KQ1SCI's and it seems to behave in the same way - it crashed when I set DOSBox's SB to IRQ5 (and DOSBox crashed with it). Using the …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Where do people get this crap that Sierra didn't ship SQ3 with a driver with sample playback functionality? It routinely pops up on message boards and on ill-informed websites. Sierra did ship version 1.0P with a "Tandy 1000 SL/TL" driver, which can play back digital samples, and Sierra did ship …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Testing SQ3 for this issue reminded me of something I always wanted to know - why did Sierra bother to record samples for this game (like when Roger's saying "Where am I?" in the intro), but never released it with a driver that actually enables the game to play them? If I'm not mistaken, the …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

> If DosBox displays it with "machine=vga" without intensity, > then that's wrong. No, dosbox acts exacly like a real vga card with a vga bios. Yup, if SQ3 is set to 4 colors CGA and loaded on a real VGA screen, you get the pink palette, not the red one. > black/cyan/red/white (first picture). …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

I downloaded the latest CVS build from aep (October 16), and it seems that out of all of the things discussed in this thread, only the b&w CGA mode was corrected. Are there still plans to include the Hue control and the RGB/composite switch in future builds? I also looked at this list and saw that …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

why Red Boost won't be included in DOSBox? It would be even another hotkey to add, Well, if +Hue is on F12, -Hue is on Shift-F12, and RGB/Composite switch is on F11, you still have Shift-F11 left :) and the gain is questionable. Well, only a more accurate emulation perhaps. However, support for the …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

You could put +Hue on F12, -Hue on Shift-F12, and RGB/Composite switch on F11. Sounds good to me. Qbix? MESS displays at Hue=0. DosBox CVS automatically switches to Hue=-15 for KQ1. Ah, you're talking about the "auto-guessing" of the correct hue that you mentioned a few posts ago. I forgot about …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

This does not have to be solved by separating "machine=cga" into "machine=cgargb" and "machine=cgacomposite"; I also could imagine switching between RGB and composite display using a function key, which of course would only be needed in mode 4 (or to be more precise, when port 0x3d8=0x2a, see c)). …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

As a result, with "COMPOSITE ON" in the PREFS file, the grass becomes blue, the "Maniac Mansion" logo becomes pink. That's obviously not right. Basically, the game treats the composite mode like Tandy's mode 8 (160x200x16), which in fact the game uses on a Tandy computer. My explanation for this is …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

I believe the author stated in the readme that it was not quite accurate. Still, it is quite the improvement and is now up to Nintendulator's standard of compatibility (i.e. just a hairsbreadth shy of perfection.) Ok, I'll use Nestopia then instead of FCE Ultra. Note that one thing that is wrong in …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

They didn't "really" support composite mode in that they didn't bother implementing it carefully, it's just a half-assed attempt at supporting it, if you will. You'll get SOME 16 colors, but those are not the ones the game is supposed to display. Hmmm... but what DOSBox produce is totally wrong …

Re: 40 Column Text Mode Issues

Neither of which looks good, of course. LucasArts didn't REALLY support composite graphics :) They didn't!? So why there's a composite line in the PREFS file? Also, Great Hierophant wrote a FAQ about the different versions of Zak McKracken (I saw it in a thread in the LucasArts Museum forum ). He …
