Recycling isn't wrong, and even with we retro-hoarders there is not that great of a demand for those old systems. This is just how life goes.

The 3D Image 9750 is also a very compatible vídeo card, I'm just not sure about speed. Should be more than OKay for anything DOS-related, and I'd be willing to bet it beats the Virge in Direct 3D. Just go with whatever gives you the best image and is reasonably period correct.

I think only Dallas chips have the C series. It is basically a Dallas chip with century bit auto-rollover.

Whats the brand of the second case? The one under the square-ish one with all missing bay covers? My old P3 had one of these, but without a photo I could never look it up.

Getting a 3D card that supports some propertary 3D standard might be a good idea, like a good quality Virge.

I know I use a Dallas RTC on a board that came with a HoustonTech RTC (with an allegedly incompatible VIA chip) without issues. Just try not to get a C-series RTC and put it in a BIOS that already has a Y2k workaround.

Acer Labs Inc., their chipset division separated as ULI later on, which eventually got bought by nVidia. Acer seems to prefer their Acer brand rather than ALi nowadays.

All that info is also found here. I find the BOOTCONFIG command even more useful, as it allows me to set up an oldschool MS-DOS startup menu and have a fully fledged Windows 9x system, with startup logos and everything.

But isn't the whole PCI graphics card thing the whole problem? That the software you wanna use has issues with PCI graphics cards? Before settling on a build you need to stablish what hardware would not give you jitter issues. I think S3 Trio64 cards also do not do bus mastering, but you'll need …

This is untested, has everything but you'd need to find a propertary case or just run it without one (or build one, if you are crafty). Also I don't know what bus the onboard stuff is attached to. It even has PS/2 ports for mice. This one and this other one are also cheap, from Ukraine Or this one …

That is why I said you don't need an AT case for an AT build. You can just use a cheap ATX case. Many of those have AT compatible mounting holes... and you could always drill the missing ones on newer designs.

Why the hell would you pay US$100 on a case? Baby AT boards can be mounted on ATX cases, you'll just have a lot of empty space Oo And with a cheap adapter and a cheap latched switch you can even use a new PSU with it. And why are you estimating so much in shipping? Buying overseas?!

IDE ports on sound cards cannot be booted from, and I think they only support CD drives anyway.

Beware, though, that the reason to use a pre-PCI system was never that you needed 486 levels of performance to begin with, but rather jitter issues with PCI graphics cards. No DOS compatibility thread is complete without a link to the DOS compatibility matrix. S3 is king for compatibility, but Trident isn't far behind, though they are probably slower.

Worst case scenario you should be able to use the 8-bit XT-IDE board. It's got an EEPROM socket where you can put the XT-IDE firmware.

I don't think there is. Also, some 486 boards might have the pads for a PS/2 connector, but I'm not sure they are 100% functional. Also, remember, I wouldn't be surprised if even here at Vogons not many people have a VLB 486 board with a PS/2 mouse header.
