I guess the real question is MMX 200 vs Pentium 200. I'd bet on the MMX, and worst case scenario, just get an MMX 233. My MMX 200 is already fast enough to trigger the Runtime error 200 anyway.

Both my PCChips M530 (i430VX) and my EFA Viking 3 (MVP3) have USB headers, but I do not think the one on the i430VX is USB 1.1, probably USB 1.0. My Compaq Deskpro 2000 (VIA VP2/97) also has USB ports.

I wonder how a Pentium MMX @ 300MHz (100 * 3) would hold up. Both the faster clock speed and faster bus speed should give it a fair advantage over the stock setup.

USB mice can only work in DOS if the BIOS supports PS/2 emulation, and it doesn't do so for keyboards only. I've got a PCChips M530 that doesn't have it, my MVP3 SS7 mobo has it for keyboard only, but all my stuff that is newer than that has it.

The boot menu appears before anything is loaded in CONFIG.SYS, so there is no way to use that to change the menu's colors. You are restricted to what you can do with MENUCOLOR.

Is the processor soldered? If not, getting a Pentium 133 or 166 should be easy and cheap. Maybe even a Pentium 200, which you could then set it to any speed you can think of with multipliers up to 3x. Btw I doubt it increases the voltage automatically. AFAIK you should get true OPL3, good SBPro compatibility and MPU-401 UART. The only downside is the lack of a wavetable header. In Windows you get a competent enough SoftSynth. HighTreason has a video review of one if these in his YouTube channel, you can check that out.

I'd try reading the BIOS EEPROM/EPROM with a programmer. Maybe the BIOS chip is busted.

VLB is fast (and can be faster than PCI in some situations), but VLB systems are usually harder to find than PCI. If you get a VLB motherboard do get a VLB multi IO - a 486 is more than fast enough to handle disk access that is too fast for the ISA bus. If you get a PCI board they usually already …

If you can find, get a VLB card with IDE/Floppy controller instead of an ISA one. VLB is faster.
