The hanging note, from what I've read, comes from a timing issue in the MPU-401 interface of SB16 based cards with affected DSP revisions. As such should only affect MIDI through the MPU-401 interface (daughterboards and external modules), and not OPL3 and EMU8K stuff.

Can't go with a single SSD with this system. This 320GB HDD currently installed is already too small for the amount of things I keep in the laptop already, and a 500GB SSD is far too expensive for me to spend on a 5-year old budget laptop. A 500GB hybrid HDD should be much more affordable.

You could just get two 16mb EDO sticks and keep it as a 32MB machine... that being said 16MB is fine for a DOS 6.22 machine. You could also hook up the Turbo switch to the FSB pins and slightly OC the bus to 66MHz on demand, so that way maybe Cybermage will run a bit better.

IDE was never meant to be hot swapped, so I'd think this issue would not be limited to XTIDE Universal BIOS. Also, did you remember to "FDISK /MBR" before formatting it?

U$125? Thanks but no thanks. I can see this as being useful for musicians with a library of MIDIs composed using the original modules - but for a retro gamer whithout a lot of money to spare VirtualMIDISynth/Fluidsynth with a good, balanced soundfont will do fine, and its free.
