The motherboard doesn't have to do anything but expose the two multiplier pins of the processor. It can't artificially limit it to 2.5. If it supports 2.5 then it MUST expose the two pins defined by the Socket 7 specs (Socket 5 only defined one pin to choose between 1.5 and 2.0).
