I like how one of the meanings of effect as a verb is Misspelling of affect. xD And yeah, I was not entirely right. One can use effect as a verb. That does not seem very common, though, and misspelling affect is the most common sight.

The advantage of the software approach is that you can also install Timidity on Linux and switch between MT32 mode and GM + nice Soundfont. I did this with an old Pentium M laptop, and works fine, I just need to set up a way to automate switching between the two modes.

You could try soldering a wire from the 16-bit 5V and GND lines and connecting it to any exposed 5V and GND pads that draw from the 8-bit ISA lines (the waveblaster connector, maybe?).

It doesn't need to have a point. I gave up trying to elaborate some rational motive for me to play with old hardware, I just do it because I like it. In the end, this is a hobby, and hobbies don't need to have a point, it is just something you enjoy doing in your spare time.

Voodoo3 is overkill, but if you have no better choices, it has drivers for Windows 3.11 and decent DOS compatibility, though not as much as the Trio64s. That V3 PCI is a better match for a PCI only Pentium 3 PC or a PCI only SS7 system.

Try the S3 cards first, and see if any of them have good image quality (the Vision probably will). If any of them has excessive brightness that might be solved by flashing a different BIOS. You can quite easily swap the COM1 and COM2 connectors to set COM2 to the DB9 port and COM1 to the DB25 port.
