If you are using DOSBox 0.74 then try installing and running with a build of current source. Some (perhaps not all) versions of The Last Express are PC/Mac hybrid cdroms that have an issue that is fixed in SVN.

A low-pass filter is implemented in the SB emulation of the DOSBox-X branch, so you can try looking at that, but I don't expect it would drop into the current official source easily because the SB stuff deviates significantly.

Yes, DOSBox emulates the ANSI.SYS driver, and you can change console text color with escape codes just like real DOS. You can also use the 4DOS shell in DOSBox, which provides a COLOR command to change text color, but it doesn't "stick" as well as the escape codes.

Heh, well, perhaps the part about increasing cycles will help someone reading the thread; because even if the sound doesn't cut out entirely, it's likely to be less than smooth with default cycles.
