Re: How reliable compact flash is?

in Milliways
not had a problem with CF but then I don't use my cards much, photography or otherwise. With SD I think I've only had problems with corrupted files using a Sigma camera which produces 46mb files and takes ages to clear the buffer [writing to disk]. Pretty sure my corrupted files are down to me not …

Re: What is a 'physical' CPU?

Maybe the marketing team wanted the message simplified so people got the gist of the argument ; not everything needs to be taken absolutely literally all of the time; ought to be reasonably obvious what they mean.

Re: A lesson to any would be game devs

I gave up on Fallen London because of this kind of thing. You play for free, but only up to a point beyond which you more or less have to pay for tokens to progress in any sensible timeframe. IIRC anyway. Not worth it for such a casual game.

Re: Windows 10 and Windows 7

in Milliways
It seems to me like I keep hearing stories about disastrous Windows 10 updates (the "Anniversary Update" is the big one that comes to mind) that turn up unexpectedly and take ages to install before breaking everything. I had to do a fresh install on one box to get Win10 updates working; it was 1607 …

Re: Windows 10 and Windows 7

Windows 10 to my mind is much cleaner and simpler, much easier to use; in some respects it feels somewhat like a return to XP, whereas 7 was in retrospect a bit of a clunky aberration. I don't see why you'd want both 7 and 10 unless you have some specific reason to do so [in which case you'd already …

Re: AMD drops the mic

Sure, and i question whether all that many new servers will be required for VMs running 32 bit let alone 16 bit operating systems. Btw i dont have an info source, i make it up as i go along.

Re: AMD drops the mic

Backwards compatibility to 32 bit OS [when there seems an easy workaround anyway] doesn't sound like a deal-breaker for power users which are presumably where the money mostly lies.

Re: What computer related book are you reading now?

in Milliways
Finally got round to reading Masters of Doom that I bought years ago. Feels like a film script. Similarly finally got round to Eduard Castranova's Virtual Worlds. Only about half way; fascinating for a WoW player to see the same issues in minds then as now [WoW had a few hundred thousand subscribers …

Re: Is win2000 as great, as every claims it to be?

in Milliways
Back in the day, though win 2000 upset me a bit because of issues with dos games [kinda why i ended up here ofc] i loved it because to me it was clean and uncluttered, and stable - far fewer bsods than i got with 98 or 95, and a lot better for gaming that nt4 had been.

Re: Bored of vintage computing?

I get this with anything - if you overdo it you can get burnt out, punch dunk, whatever you want to call it; the romance cools off a bit. I've been in a cool phase with old gear for a year or two. Having been round this particular block a few times, this time round I down-sized a bit, logged my …

Re: New OS/2 version imminent

in Milliways
Their website suggests it's about supporting current users, rather than changing the world or even being a toy os. Not immediately clear what hardware is supported. It mentions windows 3.1 and dos applications, and things being ported from linux. Doesn't sound like a windows 10 substitute nor is it …

Re: Do you ever

in Milliways
I either just stare at the screen when installation is going on, or go and do something in the real world instead. I stopped playing solitaire once they made it on-line with adverts and rankings and achievements or whatever it was they did - I forget, the insane rage that followed that discovery …
