If you have the QBASIC from DOS 6.22, why not boot DOS 6.22 itself within DOSBox? Then you won't have any issues. You can adjust the size of the DOSBox window by adjusting the relevant options in the configuration file.

I have a 486 motherboard that uses these things and the manual lists them as "RP 0Ω 8 p4R". Not sure exactly what it means but zero ohms suggests a jumper, "8 p" suggests 8 pins, and "4R" must be something to do with the pair arrangement.

Can you try a different card? Every multi-head card I've ever used defaults to mirrored mode on powerup if multiple monitors are connected. It's not until the OS drivers load that I can get different images on each monitor.

From the datasheet it looks like the version without C is already CMOS levels. That would be ironic though, if the CMOS chip was incompatible because it was using CMOS levels 😀 I take it putting the original Motorola RTC chip back in doesn't change anything?

I've done the same thing with DOSBox before - mounted the CF card as a raw disk and then used floppy images to install DOS to the CF card, all within DOSBox, just pressing Ctrl+F4 to switch to the next floppy disk image. Moving the CF card to the retro PC then boots fine.

Yep that's what I thought - a 2.5" drive needs an extra part that you don't need with a 3.5" drive :) Not a huge amount of experience with PCI SATA controllers. I know for sure Intel ones have compatibility mode, but I have a feeling you can only get these as part of a chipset and not a PCI card. …

What do you mean by a 2.5" drive not requiring a power adapter? A 3.5 drive requires an IDE cable and a molex power connector, a 2.5" drive requires this plus a 44-pin adapter as well, so it seems it would need more parts unless I am misunderstanding something. Interesting, by that era the BIOS should have full LBA support so you should be fine. Maybe trying another CF card is indeed the way to go...

Interesting. According to the datasheet it's BIOS compatible with standard PCs, so it would seem that your BIOS would be capable of talking to the controller on other I/O cards. How strange that it doesn't work!
