There was no standard for this kind of connector so it's anyone's guess. You might be lucky and they did it properly, with pin 1 going to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, etc. But the only way to know for sure (without destroying the cable) is to use a multimeter. This is pretty much what Retr0brite is. I've had some mild success with their recipe, but finding peroxide strong enough was a bit of a challenge for me.

Nice! Glad it fixed your problem 😀 @xjas: I don't think the BASIC COLOR solution would work, because it looks like it's the palette that's being changed rather than the colour. You'd need to use the PALETTE statement (if it works in text mode) to reset colour 7 back to the default.

Try "mode co80", if DOS 7.1 includes MODE.COM as came with earlier DOS versions. This resets the video mode and should return the palette to the default.

While not new DOS games as such, there is an active community that modifies existing games. For example, Commander Keen has hundreds of different mods of varying quality, some of which change the gameplay quite dramatically by patching the .exe files.

The installer might be relying on copy protection like weak bits on the floppy, and if you make a copy the weak bits disappear. You might have to install it on a real DOS machine and see if you can move it over to DOSBox afterwards.
