Re: Computer-use pet peeves

I hate the person who invented the Windows Registry and everyone inside Microsoft responsible for implementing it. I would pay to have them tortured and killed. Or I would personally volunteer to kill them with my own hands. I'm serious.

Re: dial-up modems

I just wish solar power was cheap and powerful enough that everyone would install it in their roofs and get batteries installed inside their homes for backup! That way we wouldn't need UPS units for our computers anymore! 😀

Re: Standing desks - anyone tried one?

Take a look at this article, it's very interesting: http://cirrie.buffalo.edu/encyclopedia/en/article/190/ Or, if you want the TL;DR "executive summary": changing posture often is infinitely more important than a supposedly "good" posture. Even maintaining a "correct" posture for prolonged periods …

dynasty, The advantage of having MIDI support is that you can use any hardware synth or any software synth of your choice. There is Roland Virtual Sound Canvas, but there's also Roland Hyper Canvas, or Yamaha YXG50. All of them are really good soft synths. rcblanke, Man, thanks a million for the …

dynasty, I've got a couple more suggestions for your excellent port. - Would you consider selecting all visible units of the same type when you double-click one unit? - And what about MIDI support? We have great soft-synths (like Roland Virtual Sound Canvas) that could be used to get a sound quality …

Re: question about CD-r error correction

in Milliways
if you're able to copy files from the disc just fine, then the errors were correctable... you see, the disc already has checksums in it, and file copy operations will cause these checksums to be verified during copying... if it's an uncorrectable error, you would know In an ideal world, you would …

Re: question about CD-r error correction

Mode 1 discs have additional error correction (which comes at the cost of less space available for data), and they will provide another layer of defense against corruption. Unfortunately, Mode 2 discs don't have this extra protection and they were very popular among my friends (because they could …

Re: Lack of Firewire on Laptop

Yes, you're out of luck. I've seen a similar case with a friend of mine who recently bought a super-expensive 15" Macbook pro Retina, hoping that he could still use his older (but hugely expensive in its day) SCSI flatbed scanner. He's out of luck also. There used to be a time when external SCSI …

Thanks a lot, gerwin. It looks like you're right, the original aspect of the Construction Yard is rectangular, and not square. Drat, I liked the square aspect better! Now I don't know what to do :( Are you guys playing it in the original aspect ratio? Don't you think that the "distorted" aspect …

Re: Dune II HD port at last!

You change it back when entering the battle screen, but that part should also be authentic with the rectangular pixel settings which I stated. Although I agree it looks a bit stretched, I will have to compare it to my retro system with CRT screen. Maybe Westwood somehow did not feel like drawing …

Re: Dune II HD port at last!

Mmmm, I hadn't noticed that the planet in the intro is not round. You're right, it's still squashed. Cinematic cutscenes aren't displayed properly :( Your workaround works for me as well (with a Dell 2209WA panel), but then you have to switch back to 16:9 (or 16:10 in my case) to play the game …

Re: Dune II HD port at last!

Hey, dynasty, thanks a million for this remake! I'm actually enjoying your version of the game more than the original :) My problem was simply user error on my part. I had set "window_mode=fullscreen" but I left the resolution at 640x480. That's why I had squashed image. I've set the resolution to …

Re: Dune II HD port at last!

Note that having square pixels isn't very true to the original aspect ratio either... it's already kind of squashed compared to 320x200 on a 4:3 CRT, but that's as good as we're gonna get. Hey, don't be so pessimistic! :P The problem of non-square pixels can be solved (dosbox and scummvm can do the …

Yes, it would be great to have the SC-55 soundtrack. Could somebody with access to such a Roland unit play the MIDI files and record them to FLAC, please?? By the way, there's another MT-32 pack here: http://dune2k.com/Downloads/26 Click on the third link, the one called "Dune II Music mp3" from Jun …

I had to convert them to FLAC using foobar2000 and the FLAC encoder. Take the instructions here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/15577/how-to-rip-an-audio-cd-to-flac-with-foobar2000/ But ignore the part about Audio CDs. Just load the mp3 files and select them, right click and then "convert". PS: By …

Looks nice, thanks for the heads-up. Anyone try this with one of those music packs? I like the OPL soundtrack well enough, just curious what else is worth trying. I'm using this SC-55 pack: http://dune2themaker.fundynamic.com/?page_id=102 And to me it sounds much better than the AdLib music. I …

why do you even want to disable UAC? that's stupid! it's there for a reason many bone headed IT techs disable UAC because it's "annoying"... well it's annoying for a reason... it's to protect people from having malware secretly installed onto their computers! It's annoying to THEM because they have …
