I'm going to do some more testing for you regarding the card type and irq, and I'll post the results.

I went ahead and ran the setup test using various SB options with each of the 4 versions. Here are my results. All of the files are under 1Mb.

Hopefully they might be some help to you. I can do other screen captures if you'd like, just let me know what you want.

I've just noticed another interesting thing when I try running TR1 with Glidos and OpenGL.
As I described previously, when I run the program, a black window appears, then goes to full screen, first white then black, then the cursor appears in the middle of the screen and the program freezes (until I try shutting it down and then the sound comes on, no picture until I actually click "close"). Well, I tried moving the cursor about in this black screen, and it disappears when I move it too far in any direction: it appears to be in an invisible 9 by 4.5 cm centered box -or else the screen appears to have been reduced to those dimensions.

(Should the OpenGL issue be discussed under another thread, seeing as we seem to be more concerned with sound here?)

Here's another random swipe at the audio problem. I think I've found out the cause, but I'm not sure what the fix is. Microsoft have introduced a completely new audio system for Vista, with MME and Directsound now emulated. It looks like the MME emulation isn't perfect.

Anyway, here's a new VDos32 that users Directsound. Perhaps the Directsound emulation is better.

Sound blaster, pro, and 16 all work perfectly in the test regardless of irq being 5 or 7. Sound has GREATLY improved. I hear no more scratches, but I do hear blips sometimes in the fmvs. But the 16-bit SB works great.

Thanks for feedback. That's good news. How frequent are the blips? They might be because this new version is using a smaller buffer than I was using before. Gives less of delay through the system, but may make it more sensitive to transient timing changes. Might be worth my going back to a bigger buffer.

VDos32 v0_6d works great for me too!

I've tried TR1 with both regular SB and SB16 settings, and the sound is smooth. I haven't experienced any of the blips mentioned by Rimsky82 in the FMVs. Only at the beginning of the Tutorial does Lara's voice stutter a bit for a second or two (under both SB and SB16), but it sounds rather as if the program was a bit slow starting (especially as the picture sometimes also stutters a bit), but then everything runs smooth and I haven't encountered it again (though I've only tried until the beginning of the 1st level).

I've only tried the game on one IRQ setting for each SB, but I did the Test in the TR1 Setup with all IRQs for both SB settings and all worked fine (the only peculiar thing I noted was the loudspeaker crackling a bit just before and after the sound played -a bit like when you turn the computer on and off with the loudspeakers already on).

The FMV picture is still a bit jerky, but I gather it wouldn't be corrected if it's not linked to Glidos and VDos32.

That sounds like it might be an invisible error box. Have you tried running OpenGL in windowed mode?

I think you're right. The screen went blank, stayed blank, and a error box did indeed appear. Sorry, my mistake, I now seem to remember you mentioning at some point in the past that OpenGL only works in windowed mode or something.

Cheers.

That's great news. Looks like I should probably release the new version.

I think I've seen that when running without VDos32, so that doesn't sound too much of a worry.

That too I think happens without VDos32.

In fact, it is connected with Glidos, but only when running in DirectX mode. What's more its possible to sidestep the issue by handling the VESA frames differently in Glidos. I now have it fixed. I shall release a new version of Glidos, so you should be able to see that problem gone soon too.

Should work in either mode, but if there are problems then running it Windowed can be better: more chance of seeing error messages.

Cheers.

Yeah, thanks for useful feedback again.

I think that happens only if you are using the Audio packs and not using VESA support. In that case, Glidos has no way to know when to cut the sound.

There may be other configs that cause it too, but I'm pretty sure if you use the audio pack and vesa support then it doesn't happen.

Better: don't use VESA support, use VDos32 and then there is no reliance on Windows DOS support.

Hi. I downloaded the latest version of Vdos32 from the link on the Vdos32 webpage namely 0.7. However it's giving me exactly the sound problems mentioned earlier in ths thread - choppy, stuttering sound and general slowdown of the entire game especially during the FMV's. Makes it virtually unplayable.

So I came to this thread looking for help and I downloaded the Vdos32_v0_6d version posted in this thread and I can confirm that that does work perfectly as mentioned - sound is right and no slowdown of FMV/gameplay.

Theres no background music in either version i.e. no music playing when the ring menu appears or in the Mansion or any ambient sounds either but I guess I can live with that. (Sound plays fine during the FMV's though.)

Thought I'd mention it.

Hi everyone.

OK, so I was running v0.7 of VDos32 already, but just to give it a try I changed back to v0.6d, and there's not the slightest difference I can see: picture's fine, sound is fine, FMVs and BG sound work great, when they're supposed to with both versions (and I confirm that I have none of the seams mentioned in another thread with respect to FMVs).
(Just one thing I constantly forgot to mention, the esc key is a bit oversensitive: when I try to cut short an FMV I go straight to the inventory every other time.)

I don't know whether it's worth mentioning, I upgraded my ATI graphics driver to Catalyst v7.6 recently, and TR1 through Glidos still works fine with both v0.6d and v0.7 -as before- (though I get the impression that my screen looks washed out and I can't adjust brightness and contrast properly).

Good luck.

Thanks. That's good. Sounds like the OP problems are some sort of anomaly.

BTW, to cure the washed out colours, adjust the Gamma setting in Glidos's adjust dialog... or you might find some of the texture packs look less washed out.
