Man, I was hoping not to have to get into this.

But... let's see...

1. DosFreak got beat by Slashdot.
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/13/2 … =thread&tid=127

Pretty much everything's been said there. But there's a lot of misinformation.

2. Here's some comments on MAME.net about the Slashdot thread.
http://www.mame.net/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/showpo … &sb=5#Post93387

3. You'd do best to read this:
http://www.mame.net/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/showpo … &sb=5#Post93223

4. MAME has been under the GPL already. Having looked through the source archive, 0.22 to 0.26 were under the GPL. But then it left GPL with version 0.27. The change had mostly to do with the actions of THIS F*CKER (http://www.arcadeathome.com) who's a complete and utter annoyance.

(Of course, that comic isn't about MAME, it's about eFront, and is a bit more recent than MAME v0.27.
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/03/10/1 … =thread&tid=127)

5. Here's the current MAME license.

Much of Chapter V and VII is known internally as the "Eckel clauses". 😀

6. Oh, not everyone views it as a Good Thing. I do, but I sorta have mixed feelings, as do many others.

That should answer all your questions. 😀
