Hey all, […]

Hey all,

With the release of Chrome 110 (tentatively scheduled for February 7th, 2023), we’ll officially end support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. You’ll need to ensure your device is running Windows 10 or later to continue receiving future Chrome releases. This matches Microsoft's end of support for Windows 7 ESU and Windows 8.1 extended support on January 10th, 2023.

Older versions of Chrome will continue to work, but there will be no further updates released for users on these operating systems. If you are currently on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, we encourage you to move to a supported Windows version before that date to ensure you continue to receive the latest security updates and Chrome features.

As always, please feel free to send us feedback using these instructions.

James, Chrome Support Manager

For those that like using the Steam client on 7 and 8 better make sure you have it backed up and prevent it from updating and/or use Steamless, SmartSteamEmu, Goldberg, Steam client replacements or cracks so you can play "your" games. Unknown when Valve will break it but it likely won't be too far after.

Rumour is the Chromium version used by Steam is pretty old so mabye it will take them awhile but if it is really old then that's a big vulnerability.
So in their laziness they use chromium for their game launcher which theoretically take most of the work out of their hands but they can't even be bothered to update it.

It looks like GOG Galaxy, Amazon Games, Battle.net, Epic and Ubisoft are chromium based too so make sure you starting backing up "your" games with the needed fixes now. I mention GOG Galaxy since their .dlls do break OS compatibility so although the games may not need the launcher alot of times the associated dll which is needed by the game drops compatibility.

I expected such news, yet it is upsetting. Getting locked out of one's games collection is annoying, moreso when this happens due to discretionary decisions of Valve - to deny access to those with Windows XP, and now - Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

This is why I stopped buying digital games. We traded convenience for the 'right' to be fxxked over on the whims of a third party.

Indeed, Steam emulators and cracks are solutions. Piracy is a service problem and it seems the users of 'warez' are the ones getting good service, while users of legit systems are getting the short end of the stick.

I don't even know why Valve has replaced large parts of Steam with a webbrowser when what they had originally worked just fine. A lot of stuff doesn't work when you launch with "-no-browser", you can't even see update change logs!

"Chromium Embedded Framework" and "Electron" really should never have been "invented". Wish people would just stick to making programs in actual C or C++ and using whatever widget toolkit belongs to a particular OS.

I guess it's a good thing I stopped using Windows 7 and moved to Linux, but I still don't like dealing with anything Chrome/Chromium related. It takes almost two days to even compile that crap.

Windows 7 extended kernel?

There's already stuff like this for the developer-ignorant "eol LMAO!!! get 10 its literally free" regressions that began around when MS thought it'd be clever to sabotage Windows with new Visual C runtimes relying on path functions again like old times (only this time these new runtimes are 10 exclusive and not part of any updated "just get the runtimes" package)

On the other hand, thank goodness Steam wasn't python powered.

Apparently this project is targeted to provide compatibility layer for Windows 7 without full blown modding, like it was made for Vista.

Wow, that's pretty messed up. I still have a Win7 Ultimate machine that I'd rather not update, so I will take this advice on that machine. Thanks. (Note: I do have other PCs with Win10, so those are not on the hit list; I'd just like to leave the Win7 machine alone).
