And hundreds of compact discs in jewel cases, prominently displayed.

Quick access back before virtual drives were really an option.
That setup reminded me of older friends houses in the early 2000's. 3 or 4 guys move out of home and rent a place together and place becomes a permeant lan party house with computers and cables everywhere 😀

My computing area. Just moved into a new house. Can display my collection a little better now. Even had enough room in the closet of this room to set up a small tech station area that i have always wanted.

F.E.a.R., BEST GAME EVER.

i like the seating - one for each machine and 2 as a 'waiting room' for those eagerly awaiting their turn 😀

😀 😀 😀

There's more but it is not in the picture. On the right next to the Macintosh LC475, there is a Power Macintosh G3 Minitower. In another room, there is an Imac G3 Indigo 😀 . In another room (but not connected), there is a Powermac G4 MDD, a Powermac G5 (without hard drive), a dismantled Windows 98 PC, and an Amiga 500 inside the original box.

All the above are in the house where I grew up and during this period I am doing an overhauling of the hydraulics.

In the house where I live with my family, I have a Macintosh Performa 6116CD and a Cyrix 6x86 PR120+ PC with Dos and Windows 95. These two are my daily computers. Almost every day I use them for gaming.

The purpose is to make a retro playroom in the house where I grew up with the ability for a lot of people to be able to choose a machine and play games 😀. So I can bring friends or my kids and have a great time 😀

Later I replaced the Synoptics hub with an HP Pro Curve Switch.
My year 1998 thru 2004 cable modem home network.
With 20-inch Sony Monitors, HP Computers, HP Officejet, and Printers.
CD’s were popular back then.

50mb/s internet download speeds.

It's a physical server rack and not virtual server space in some cloud.
That in itself is becoming retro (which I understand but every time I decommission one part of me dies inside)

Every PC setup needs teddy bears and Coke.
I am Jealous. I have NOT had a Sugar water soda in decades.
But I do miss the taste of Coke Cola and Root Beer especially.
I think I will buy some Sugar FREE Root Beer this weekend.

I know this from the jpg metadata yes, but also because I'm pretty certain that's the packaging to an Intel Pocket PC Camera in the bottom right-hand corner of the photo:

The Intel Pocket PC Camera was released in Aug 2000. It was notable for being a product that tried to straddle the line between webcam and consumer digital camera at a time when those things didn't really exist at its $150 price point. So to me its ability to take full-colour 640x480 images that looked ok-ish for the time was enticing.

All that to say, this photo was definitely taken on that camera and may well be the first digital image I ever captured.

As for what's in the pic, from left to right, a 14" AAMAZING VGA crt, a 21" NEC MultiSync that weighed a ton and made the coolest/loudest degausing noises I'd ever heard, and a 17" ViewSonic - my first "big screen" monitor. Can't remember what's in those extremely generic but apt for the time beige ATM cases (AOpen I think?). Good stuff I'm sure. 🙂

I got a competitor to that cam early in the noughts, a JamCam... never got very good pics with it though, needed a lot of light, or the shutter speed was wayyyy too slow, like people needed to breathe even if they froze and didn't blink. Then it would only get 3 sharpish pics out of a fresh 9V battery and then go stripey and noisy. 3 pics per high end alkaline was about as convenient as wet glass plate victorian cameras and as expensive as polaroid.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Oh this thing was better than that - mine at least passed the threshold of "good enough" to be useable. That said, you might have noticed I had every available light source on in that picture, both natural and artificial. Otherwise...

Ah yeah, the "bottom of an aquarium" tint is a bit familiar from that and other later low end cams. I think mine was actually faulty, but got it on a close out deal, so no returnsies boo, some claimed they got 150 pics per batt with it.

Two days ago I decided to reorganise my computer room, as it hadn't changed much in the last 6 years! (I moved some more systems in, and a few out and now it feels much more spacious!)

The boxes on top of my printer contain the parts of my dual Pentium pro build that i still need to get to!

I also have consoles and computers placed around the rest of my place!

My computer space in Cape Town remains unchanged for now:

The question I'm starting to ask myself is, when is enough enough?
