A while ago I posted on another thread about a CRT problem that I was having. It has discoloration at the bottom left and it would never completely go away. It always was worse when it was off for a while. Here's what that looked liked:

Recently this issue was resolved after years of having this problem and I wanted to share my experience just in case it might help someone else. In Dec. of this year I moved roughly 200 miles away and hauled all my stuff by uhaul. I was very careful with all my vintage gear making sure it wouldn't move around but setting it on the floor of the moving truck. Well I guess the vibrations of the moving truck fixed this monitor because this is what it looks like now:

So, if you have a similar discoloration problem and degaussing does nothing to eliminate it maybe try vibrating the monitor for a little while. Just thought I'd post about my experience.

I don't think vibration has much to do with it, rather changing magnetic fields during transport and at the new location.

Interesting, in what way would there be a major change in magnetic fields? Its pretty much set up in the exact same place as it was previously sharing the desk with the same items. I don't think there was a major magnetic field in the last house I was in. How do you mean?

by location I meant geographic location and orientation, not where on the desk ^^
but yeah also the building, walls, cabling etc. can make a difference, you are constantly surrounded by magnetic fields 😉 even if you don't notice it, even if it's "just" the earths magnetic field
monitors degauss every time you turn them on for a reason 😀

Then I guess my advice is if you are having this problem with your vintage CRT you should probably move. 😀

Get your priorities straight fellow hardware collectors.

Same thing happened to the guy that did buy my Compaq and DELL monitors... He did show me later on pictures with the same crap discoloration i was like wtf... My conclusion was that maybe he did damage them as they was next to each other and maybe that did cause this problem, or in that room there was strong magnetic field of some sort....

The good part about all this is the fact they can fix after that..

Oh Yeah, I guess I never really took a good look at those birds. I bet allot of people in the America(s) assumed those were Parrots because they
Are very common and popular colorful birds in America(s).

Viewsonic still make good monitors. The Viewsonic XG2431 they released a few months back is amazing. IPS, 240hz refresh rate, freesync premium, excellent motion blur reduction with PureXP and lots of customization for backlight strobing/refresh rate stuff thanks to a partnering with BlurBusters.

Still a bit expensive here in Canada for a 1080p panel. But one of the best Esports Gaming Monitors to choose if you where looking for one. Very glad i treated myself with one, I haven't bought a new main monitor in years.

I picked up two 21" Viewsonics few years ago for free but unfortunately the tubes were really worn out and had severe burn in. I could read text etc. of some accountant program that was always in same way on the screens... Their electronics contained a lot of nice parts that have been used to rescue other hardware so the pickup wasn't in vain ~

I wish i could fall in love with CRTs again. But they take up so much space and my room is small. I just don't have the free space to keep such a large desk around for one anymore.

But how will i ever be able to live without using those early 3D goggles like the Cybershades? Those need a CRT. Sacrifices had to be made 🙁

Its a little while back... but there was a really good trash pick where many people seemed to be getting rid of CRTs...
I sold and repaired the rest except for the large Dell Trinitron which had a busted tube, and I kept the Multiscan 15sf II..

The View sonic displays I use to own always had problems and I would have to take them to a local monitor repair shop to get fixed.
I switched to Sony because they where more abundant in Silicon Valley and had higher specs and good warranty. There was a local Sony campus here where I could take the monitors and get fixed on warranty. The Sonys were just a better Value for me with the local Sony repair center. The View sonic I would have to take to a third party repair center which also did a good job in fixing them.

I don’t miss CRT’s. Today I just send my LED displays to recycle center. NO more heavy lifting HOT CRT monitors.
Back in 1990’s working in IT you needed a small cart to move CRT Displays. Also they are often broken during shipping.

Check out my tiny desk from the post above. You don't need a large desk or area to fit a single CRT.

Holy crap! That is nice and compact. Yeah something like that might work, idk why i didn't think of it.

On my main PC, i like to keep a decent amount of space between my screen and keyboard. I'm a low DPI arm-aim person, so i need lots of desk space for my mouse when playing shooters.

The CRT I've currently got out is a Panasonic PanaSync E70i model TX-T7F22-G manufactured in January 2000. The main reason a pair of these survived the CRT purge about 10 years back is they support sync on green which makes them compatible with the various UNIX workstations I've got. I don't have any UNIX machines setup these days so for now its doing a good job on my 486:
