An older HP xw4600 'workstation'

I got it second hand for free, it was lacking most parts though, including the side panel. Luckily I found one.

Quirks,
-Very picky with RAM, unclear if it can take a maximum of 8 or 16 GB,
-Despite having two PCIe x16 slots, it is not capable of SLI or Crossfire.
-Despite being made in around 2009 or so it still has PCIe 1.1, this imposses some limitation on my GPU.

Specifications is a Xeon X3363, clocked at 2.83 with 4 cores.
8GB of DDR2 RAM
SoundBlaster XFi
Killer NIC (because I think a 400MHz cpu for a network card is hilarious)
250GB Solid State Drive (for Windows 7 and apps)
2TB Hard Drive for 'stuff'
GPU is a Geforce GT 730, it has 2GB of RAM

DVD Drive
Media card reader with a built in Floppy Drive that dosen't work for some reason.

Other things of note:

Apparently HP had a front fan option, but it required some sort of sheeth or sleeve that I naturally had no access to. So I managed to bolt a fan in front myself using a guide I found online.

The Xeon is a 771 socket CPU and is not meant for a Socket 775, I put a special sticker of sorts on the bottom of the CPU and trimmed the plastic around the socket and voila, a Xeon. It was pretty cheap and had enough advantages over the Core2 Quad that I didn't see the harm.

The monitor is a 1600x900 HP from a few years back.
I use a Unicomp Model M keyboard
I don't have speakers connected, rather I use vintage Koss 4aa Headphone
My controller is a USB playsega controller inside a genuine Sega Saturn controller shell.
My mouse is an old microsoft optical mouse.

I gave up on modern gaming so the lack of analog sticks don't bother me much.

Too many PC's to mention haha, but the "main" one is a QX9770 Core 2 Quad Extreme on an Asus Striker II, 8GB DDR3, Sapphire R9 290, Scandisk Extreme SSD, 2x WD VelociRaptors 300GB in RAID 0, SB X-Fi Fatal1ty Champion sound and as a finishing touch a USB3/SATA6G upgrade controller card.

Old but gold. Runs strong, reliable, magnificent to behold really. I have far more powerfull systems but they don't have that extra "something" to them. That's why this is the main one, the punisher, the bouncer, the godfather !

Still a work in progress.. planning to soon buy a second GTX-770-4GB card for it then it will be "Done" for the fore-seeable future.

Latest addition is the water loop yesterday for the CPU + VRM + Mosfet section together.

Now:
Intel Ivy Bridge i7-3770k @ 4800 Mhz
16GB (4 x 4GB) Mushkin Enhanced Blackline Ridgeback DDR3-2400, currently running stable @ 2271 Mhz now.
Single EVGA GTX-770-4GB SuperClocked Edition, custom bios @ 1202 Mhz
It's kinda hidden up in the top right but also running a pair of Samsung 850 Pro 128 GB SSD's in Raid-0 for OS
Also a 3-way set of Seagate normal desktop drives up there for big storage. 3 x Seagate 7200 rpm Sata-300 / 3 Gbps hard drives @ 750 GB each, raid-5 on Onboard intel raid.
And powered by Seasonic Platinum 1000-watt power supply. Currently under-utilized, entire system pulls about 320 watts when gaming.. but second gpu will change that later.

Gigabyte UD5H-BK, i7 4790, 16GB Crucial Ballistix in a Corsair Carbide 400R.
GPU is a HIS R9 280x (may add a second one down the road, hence the HX1000i power supply 😀 ).
Sandisk 120gb SSD for the OS, 500GB Seagate and 80GB Maxtor for data.

The system crunches for seti@home (and occasionally einstein@home) 24/7.

The picture is about 9 months old, but the only thing I've changed is the CPU fan (replaced the dying/leaking Cooler Master with an industrial Noctua).

This is my main rig built in 2013, mostly for Witcher 2. It originally had a Radeon 7970 in there, but that was changed out for a GTX980 some time back. Specs are:
Motherboard: Asus Sabertooth X79
CPU: Core i7 3820 (Sandy Bridge)
Ram: 16gb Kingston Hyper-X 2133mhz
Video: Leadtek Windforce GTX980
Sound: Asus Xonar DG
Drives: Intel 520 SSD boot drive, 1TB WD Black for games, 1TB & 2TB WD Green storage drives
Optical: Asus 24x DVD-RW
Case: Corsair 650D
Cooling: Corsair H80i
PSU: Corsair AX860
OS: Win 10 64bit

SGT%20X79%20GTX980_zpssv7ug7ov.jpg

The CPU is clocked at an unstressed 4.3ghz at more or less stock vcore. I've run it up to 4.8ghz stable but the added power consumption and heat really wasn't worth it. I got a really good deal in the GTX980 and its clocked to near GTX980Ti performance levels. Input devices are a Cooler Master CM Storm mechanical keyboard/ Logitech G500 mouse paired with a QNix 27" 1440p monitor and Harmon Kardon Soundsticks.

I'll keep upgrading and using this for the foreseeable future as this rig really does everything I need. An upgrade to the video card got me through Witcher 3 @ 1440p High settings , while I took advantage of Microsoft's free upgrade promotion for Win 7 owners to Win 10. The next upgrade to the video card will be when something comes out that the GTX980 can't handle or Nvidia/ AMD release something so ground breaking that you just gotta have it. Might put in a 3960x some time in the future and maybe an SSD as a games drive.

My main rig is running since the cpu was available 😎

It consists off:
Intel I7-3930K
Asus Sabertooth X79
8x 4gb Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz
MSI Nvidia Geforce GTX 780ti Twinfrozer
Creative SoundBlaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Champion
1x 1TB Crucial MX200
2x 1TB WD 7,2k Sata drives (old, from two builds ago)
4x 3,5TB WD green 5,4k Sata drives
1x Blu-ray burner (with DVD-RAM capability)
Corsair 850W Modular PSU (don't know exact version anymore, already 9 years old from two builds ago)
Chieftec LBX-02B-B-B version tower (old, also from 2 builds ago) with 3 extra 92mm fans and one extra 120mm fan.
Scythe Mugen Cooler, still happy with it after all this time.
Some no-name card reader

Earlier on I paired the GTX780ti with my old GTX260 for Physic calculations but this didn't work well anymore after a driver update.
Funny fact regarding the mainboard, I already did 16 bios updates and it's again not fully up to date. 🤣
Asus really shitted out a lot of updates for this board to remove every minor issue and improve newer memory.

The 32GB ram is a big plus, RAMdisk really is fun to keep your system lightning fast. 😲

My current PC is not so current. Up until a week ago, I had a 6 yr old Acer laptop running linux as my *only* PC. My son, though, has a pimped out i5 gaming rig. 🤣. So this weekend I hooked up my XP GOG.com gaming machine. Now I use it for Vogons, GOG.com and YouTube, offloading those activities from my laptop (which is used for email and finances).

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Don't feel bad, my fiance has an i7 rig. I use a lowly overclocled G3258 with a GTX 950 but, hey, does exactly what I need. The i7 will last her years if it doesn't explode... she only plays sims! My next upgrade will most likely be Zen.

Nice. That thing is a beast! Funny how you're not even missing much with brand new CPU's

QX9770? Damn. Nice! How much did that thing cost you? I went from a Core2Duo E6400 to a Core 2 Quad Q6600 and the extra 2 cores made it like a completely new system for modern day usage and multitasking.

My main system is a mix of old and new. It was originally a prebuilt HP p6774y from my uncle, which he was going to throw away because it had a dead HD and dead DVD drive. It came with 6 gigs of ram.

Original specs, and the items with "+" is what I added

Original case
Original motherboard
Original Phenom II X4 840T (basically an OEM Phenom II X4 945) CPU
+GeForce GTX 960
+8GB DDR3 1333
+240 GB SSD
+500 GB 2.5" drive
+1 TB Western Digital Blue
+Intel Pro/1000 1GbE
+500W Evga Bronze PSU
+random DVDRW (lol)

It can be expanded to 16GB and to Phenom II X6 95W CPUs. As it is right now it's pretty beastly, though I would like a Phenom II X6 but can't justify the cost of them these days. Regardless, it still plays modern games pretty flawlessly. The motherboard is mATX but orientated upside down in the case. The laptop drive is actually on the outside of the drive cage, but I positioned it such that it was screwed in and secured nicely.

One nice thing i've noticed about prebuilt machines is how quiet they are. This thing is completely silent.

Not much really. We have a very healthy second hand community here in Belgium. Lots of hardware going around and thus at fairly low prices. Because of that I also own a full blown mint Dell XPS 720 H2C and have an Acer Predator Crusader II system on the way (next Sunday). The QX9770 is overclocked to 3.83Ghz btw and is far more powerful than most people think 😁

QX9770 is indeed very powerful. A great upgrade option for older 775 machines. I like the idea of buying second hand OEM gaming machines.

Absolutely. I'm always hunting for the right bargain though; it has to be near perfect and with as much packaging/original accessories etc as possible. And of course at a great price.

So far I have in my collection that Dell XPS 720 system, that Acer Predator and a Dell XPS 1730 laptop. They're all quite old by today's standards but still a joy to use and to behold. I kinda compare it to older exotic sports cars. For me it's like driving a 20-year old Ferrari.

Apart from those machines, I also own the QX9770 setup, paired to DDR3, which serves as my main gaming system for now. Another one is a Phenom X6 1100T onto a Crosshair IV board with an Asus Matrix Platinum HD7970. A third one is A hexacore Xeon 5650 onto a Gigabyte X58A-UD7 board with 12GB Mushkin radioactive modules. These are custom build by me.

C2Q huh? Stuff from 5-6 years ago is enough for almost anything, even some of the latest games. Here's my previous main rig from 2009-10, which my X79 build earlier replaced. At the time I was really into AMD so I built an AM3 system. I kept upgrading it over the years so it's pretty up to date actually. These days its a backup system, but I would never get rid of it.
