Just built two rigs today, one for XP and one for 98. Why two? One of them doesn't have support for anything prior to XP.

XP rig:

300W Deer DR-A300ATX (recapped)
ASUS P4B533 Rev 1.04 (recapped)
Pentium 4 2.80GHz/512k/533FSB Socket 478
ASUS/ATi Radeon HD3450 512MB AGP8x
3Com 3C905C-TXM 10/100 NIC
80GB WDC WD800BB IDE HDD
Pioneer DVD-117 DVD-ROM
Windows XP SP3 MCE2005
JNC case w/ multicolour LEDS
98 rig:

400W Allied AL-8400BTX (recapped)
ASRock K7VT4A+
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton)
ATI Rage Fury/Xpert2000/Rage128 32MB AGP
40GB WDC WD400BB IDE HDD
LG 52x CD-ROM
Windows 98SE
JNC RJA-52 case I modded in black/white 😎

I am thinking of dualbooting Arch Linux or some kind of Linux distro along XP.

you use them without any ram at all? 😮 doesnt it slow down sometimes?

Whoops! Seems like I forgot to write the amount of RAM - 1GB for each. Amazingly,98SE works fine with 1GB without the need to do that MaxMemory patch.

ATI_Loyalist - soon,as today I'm gonna get some more PC stuff.

Arch or Debian would work pretty well on your XP rig, if you want to monkey with it. So would one of the BSD variants.

On your 98se rig, you might want to see about tracking down a newer video card - a Rage 128 will bottleneck that Athlon XP pretty badly - but otherwise it looks pretty solid. The most classic might be a Voodoo3 or a Voodoo5, but you'd do well with a GeForce2, Quadro 2, G400 Max or classic Radeon DDR, too.

Main Box: Macbook Pro M2 Max
Alas, I'm down to emulation.

Yes, a V3 or V5 might be a better card... but then he needs to change the mainboard.

I have also the K7VT4A+ (with KT400A and 1.5V AGP), but i think i'll not use it anymore...

So, to max out the Barton, you go better with a GF4-Ti, or even a GF-FX (with nglide alternative).

#1 K6-2/500, #2 Athlon1200, #3 Celeron1000A, #4 A64-3700, #5 P4HT-3200, #6 P4-2800, #7 Am486DX2-66

As I promised, here are some pictures.

Unfortunately the K7VT4A+ died (Super IO gets burning hot and will not spin any fan or anything) and the only KT400A replacement I have isn't POSTing. (Gigabyte GA-7VA)
For the time being,I put a Matsonic MS-8137C+ (ECS K7VTA2 rev2.0 (SDR+DDR)/Syntax SV266A - Syntax did a better job at rebranding ECS) along with a MX440 64MB.

For 1GB of ram under 98SE, highly recommend to use the Vcache patch by Xeno86, 3DMark2001 SE doesn't work without it for me.

Any reason why he limited to 384MB? Why not 512MB or 1GB? 2GB might have been the max on most motherboards at the time. Was there a step by step write up on what Xeno86 did to patch it?

I usually didn't need to do the [VCache] patch on my systems. There's rarely been the need of it. In fact, any system I've had more than 512MB of RAM in it ran 98SE fine without any patches.
