So far ..so good ..
both thinkpad screens are perfect ...both units post...both floppy drives appear to function.
One has slight damage to the rubberised coating ..
The other is perfect..
..and luck was with me today on fleabay..
just bought a job lot of 2.5" ide pata hard drives ..
1x10gb
2x20gb
1x30gb
2x40gb
1x60gb
1x80gb
laptop pulls ..untested..
some may be knackered ..
but £8.50 including poatage
Thats a £1 each and some risk..
Even if I get 50% of them viable..thats a good deal.
😁

Just finished surface checking the 8 laptop drives I won on fleabay ..
6 of the 8 test 100% working ..no bad blocks ..
One I suspect will have to be tested again mounted by pata adapter ..
It refuses to be tested by usb interface ..
one of the 20gb drives doesn't spin up at all ..
still ..I recon I did alright even if the final tally is 6 out of 8..

The problem with old high hour hard disks is that they make a lot of noise. Especially in a laptop that would be a reason for me to buy new old stock or if possible upgrade to SSD or CF card. You can still get new 40gb 2.5'' for ca. € 20 on epay.

Someone has got to stop me ..
Am I an addict ?
can you get addicted to laptops ??? 🤣
Just saw 2 x x600 IBM thinkpads (job lot) on fleabay ..and no one was bidding so snapped em up for £26 delivered..
A fair price ..but no hard drives ..
which is understandable and sensible..
fingers crossed the caddies are still present though.
If I can get at least one of these working ..then I suspect it will fill the Windows ME gap in my collection.
..and then I will try and find an external floppy at a non rip-off price.

How about adding some AMD laptops to your collection? I have two K6-II's from Toshiba and one rare Fujitsu Siemens Liteline.

I'm sure the Thinkpads wont be my last aquisition ..
but I'll have to gather more funds before I add any more..
My rarest laptop ..if you can call it that is the Toshiba T5200 ..
..very much still a work in progress with all the mods done to it ..
Then of course there is the older T3200 ..which although working doesn't have a screen..
one day perhaps ?????

Totally agree regarding used drives ...but if these are checked and prove viable ...I'm happy to build the OS on a used drive..as often this is only a tempoary measure anyway.
I guess I'm a bit OCD insofaras I RAW image hard drives ,,and store the image away.
That way I can avoid rebuilding the OS in the event of HD failure.
Just a clone image to a replacement HD avoids the heartache of losing everything.
