Sony CDU-55E 2x CD-ROM IDE

finally i found a good condition 1994 drive. it is less yellowish, than my 1995 sony drive!

That's the first CDROM drive I owned back in 1993 I think.
It came with a Sony CDROM controller.

I think you could use a nicer case and maybe paint the inside white with some type of fuse on the power supply atx connector to keep it from ever blowing out and destroying those nice cards.

If you really want a period correct PC back in 1993 my 486dx-33 had 4mb ram , 8mb max, ISA motherboard , 2x sony cdrom, sound blaster 16, oaktech ISA graphics, 5.25 and 3.25 floppy drive.
IDE ISA controller, 14” svga display, keytronics 101 keyboard and Logitech serial mouse 3 button.
Conner 120mb hard-drive. Windows 3.11. DOS 6.22

But very nice setup.

This config is targeted the end of 1994 (please check the first post), and everything is period correct, except:
* the psu - which is nos, very latest fsp AT psu, with “modern” inside (active pfc, overload protections). I dont want to replace it, this the safest solution. I have a 250w version, they rechecked at a professional lab.
* the hdd - the model is authentic, but later revision. The 1994 version was black.
* the hdd controller - maybe it is newer, but i am not sure, simply no information about it (just the manifacturing date)

I plan to restore the original color of the front, but anyway it is also period correct. Until now, I did not find a nicer case - very hard to find one. The typical inside was the grey or the shiny version at these cheap cases.

here is the list (test, etc in the news):
Asus VL/I-486SVGOX4 rev 1.2 SiS 85C471 QR => Jul 1994
Intel DX4 100 WB SK096 => Oct 1994

Roland MPU-IPC => Sep 1988

Sony CDU-55E 2x CD-ROM IDE => Oct 1994

from this document looks, the silver version of the wdc 2730 was available from Oct 1994

black series (2730 + 31000):
https://stason.org/TULARC/pc/hard-drives-hdd/ … -ATA2-FAST.html

silver series (2730 + 2850 etc), so the silver 2730 is also period correct.

I like those WD silver medalist drives. They are fast and quiet and perform well.
I have a bunch of WD 540mb. IDE drives that I use with my 486 computers.
The old bios supports them well and auto detect.
If you are looking for a hard-drive with authentic 1980’s ticking sound when reading and writing on the hard-drive then the Conner 540mb. Is hard to beat. These drives sound really nice and very retro.

But are limited in storage so sometimes i use an IDE CF card adapter with 8gb. Sandisk extreme card.
Which also work well with old bios.
In widows-95 the CF card gives you better performance in multitasking and performance.
I can run MacAfee antivirus scan on the 5x86-133 and play a music cdrom and browse the internet at the same time.
So I would say that for best performance and audio play back I would go with a CF card.
If smooth performance and audio play back from your sound cards is most important to you.
But if you are 1994 and just using DOS and Win3x then the conventional hard-drive should do fine.
