Due to issues with my old CUBX machine I've decided to build myself a P4 based Windows XP gaming machine to replace it.

Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 3.4ghz (Northwood)
Asus P4C800-E Deluxe
3GB DDR400
Geforce 3 TI500 64MB
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
Thermaltake CPU Cooler
160GB WD Black Series 2.5" SATA HD
Rosewill Power Supply

I'm currently waiting for a Geforce FX5900XT 128mb card to come in from ebay. I recently obtained (for free!) an arctic cooler brand cooler that is meant specifically for FX5900XT cards, so it should be interesting to put that together when it shows up. This is the cooler - http://www.madshrimps.be/articles/article/287 … ng-the-FX5900XT

Currently I have the CPU slightly overclocked and running at 3.55ghz. (Back to stock clockspeed, wouldn't run Prime95 for any decent length of time overclocked)
Benchmarks @ 3.4ghz:
3dmark2000 - 11338
3dmark2001 - 10297
3dmark2003 - 1559
Quake 3 (1920x1080, max detail) - 105.3fps

I'll post some pics tonight after work, overall I'm quite happy with it. Feels noticeably quicker than the Tualatin it's replaced.

EDIT - Updated and fixed some info.

I love these systems. Have a P4C800-E with a P4 HT Northwood and Audigy 2 ZS myself. It also has a passively-cooled 6600GT with VIVO. 😁

Good stuff!

I actually found my old X-Fi soundcard today and so I've replaced the Audigy 2 with that.

EDIT - back to the Audigy 2, the drivers seemed to install with the X-fi but XP just sits loading forever with it in a PCI slot.

Picked up a nice used case on Kijiji a few days ago, came with an LG brand DVD-RW drive that works.

Also the FX5900XT finally arrived and the artic cooler is installed and working nicely.

I'll take some pics and post them tomorrow, I'm quite happy with this build now though.

Benchmarks:
Aquamark 3 - 38055
3dmark 2000 - 12723
3dmark 2001 - 14268
3dmark 2003 - 5156
3dmark 2005 - 1021
3dmark 2006 - 302
Quake 3 (1920x1080) - 224.3fps

Overclocked to 500mhz core and 800mhz memory:
Aquamark 3 - 45858
3dmark 2000 - 12853
3dmark 2001 - 15748
3dmark 2003 - 6161
3dmark 2005 - 1267
3dmark 2006 - 368
Quake 3 (1920x1080) - 247.7fps

Everything is rock stable at those speeds, might try for a little more tonight after dinner.

EDIT - it won't go much higher on core or memory without artifacts/crashing, so I'll leave it at these speeds.

Nice work,

Now I am itching to now compare it to the Athlon-64 3800 I put together with FX5900XT 😀 (running windows 98 of course)

Should be interesting! I'm running XP Pro on this P4.

Some pics of the machine now that it's complete.

I added a few things to it recently including a P4 HT sticker, a zalman fan controller (to dial the speed down a bit on the case fan), an el-cheapo wireless card from eBay and a rosewill card reader.

how loud is that GPU fan?

Very quiet, the CPU and case fans are both louder.

EDIT - There's some noise measurements in that madshrimps article I linked in my first post, here is the page - http://www.madshrimps.be/articles/article/287 … 1#axzz5r21Lpy7Q

I wouldn't go that far but it is very quiet.

NICE!

What's the white thing on the back of the video card?

aluminum heatsink for the rear memory.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

I haven't really had a chance to do a full set of benchmarks on my Athlon 64-3800+, but I did throw 3dMark2001 at it (also using a FX5900XT card)

Video card stock - 17219
Overclocked video card (475 core/825 memory) - 18875

Just loving this build 😀 Although, if you feel I'm derailing your thread, let me know and I'll step back 😀

Now that's a nice P4 system 😀 (well truth to be told the Pentium IV is soon nearing 20 years old... It's really weird that Intel kept it as a part of their lineup during the transition from PGA to LGA)

By the way those Arctic Silencer coolers really remind me of the HIS IceQ Radeon card's coolers... Really a rather unusual yet awesome design.

(edit: forgot some words, oops)
