Hello,

I have an IBM type code 6133919 full-sized planar (PC/AT model 5170, 256/512kB system board, year 1985 week 43) which I've always assumed to be destroyed, as the computer breakers cut off a corner (to mark their intent of recycling the huge PCB before I could rescue it). On closer look I wonder if possibly nothing vital got severed, just fiberglass, so I'd like to try powering it up. On the other hand, the breakers also pulled its 2 or 4 (E)EPROM chips as those had re-use value so the BIOS is gone...

I wonder if the correct microcode images could still be found somewhere on the web for DIY burning? (There is an electronic parts shop in town who still sell EEPROM and even program them.)

Hello,

A bit of status update: I have downloaded original IBM BIOS images from the suggested minus zero site and had them burned to EPROMs, but apparently the cut-off motherboard corner must have damaged something since two yellow caps on the board blew upon power-on. Anyhow, thank you for the BIOS-finding effort!

(I just wonder why the very comprehensive minuszero site has no info about the XT/3270 and XT/AT-370 models, which are also IBM PCs but contain 2-3 extra cards for mainframe terminal and code-running emulation?)

Nah, those yellow caps are tantalums, they tend to blow due to voltage spikes. just cut the blown ones off, check the mainboard voltage supply rails for short circuits and if none, try again to run it.

oh, and make sure to add a battery to the board. I'm pretty sure it won't boot without one.

Yes those caps exploding is to be expected. Has nothing to do with your cut corner
