Okay, it’s showtime!

Got off to a scary start. No post…

But eventually traced that back to the gfx and the smi header. Also the computer seems to refuse to post at 100fsb.

I may need a bios update. I think I recall nonsense like this when trying to use k6+ with the bios that was on the other board.

I’ll see if I can dump this bios and discover which bios is on that floppy soon

But good news!! Cpuz works on this board!

I’m gonna be really disappointed if I can’t get this ti500 working on this board. Seller sent a pic of the card posting in another computer. So it SHOULD work…. I just gotta figure out why it isn’t for me…

Okay bios:
The bios loaded onto the board is dated 3/23/2000 according to cpuz

note: was dumped via uniflash, check integrity before flashing

now on to the floppy....

Edit: for no reason what so ever the higher fsb settings are now working. Maybe I had to set bios settings then try again? Idk. But it’s running at 600 mhz now.

And I’ve been unable to recover the file from that disk… 🙁 so sad.. We need to find another source, or maybe send it off for data recovery

moving on, the undocumented setting for 112mhz fsb appears to also work on the ultra but windows froze on boot I assume this means the cache is having a stroke. trying lowering cache timing from fastest to fast

supercordo, did you discover any other undocumented dip settings on the ultra?

from what I can tell the all off setting on the voltage regulator gives 0.2v total core voltage which is obviously useless and the next settings is 1 on which gives 2.15v switch appears to be a +0.1, switch 2 appears to be +0.2, switch 3 appears to be +0.4, switch 4 appears to be +0.8 but one switch must be activated to have anything useful for voltage. (this is partially assumption not fully tested)

Edit: back to the bios, I now believe that the one I dumped may in fact actually be the one we were looking for, the board posts saying D5 and the file says D5 in the name

Yes, your board came with the latest Ultra “D5” BIOS! 😀

I’ve checked your 3/23/2000 BIOS dump and it is a valid BIOS.
Details:
BIOS_ID: 03/23/2000-VP3-686A-2A5LEM2QC-00
Sign-on: FW-5VGF+/ultra-D5-0331
Award version: v4.51PG

This BIOS also supports the K6-2+/ -III+ CPUs and has the “new” 32GB bugfix for HDD support up to 128GiB and to allow drives up to 640GiB to be attached. So nothing for me to "fix"...

Please note that your 3_23_2000 BIOS dump has no file extension so you may want to add .bin to the filename before sending it in for UR. Or rename the BIOS file to “5vgfud5.bin” to match the original. 😉

Just installed the D5 bios. I didn't see a performance increase at all.

Oh well.

See any mods that could be done to the bios?

Gonna copy another of my replies here also see if I can get input, “Okay guys,
I got in the last two days some interesting hardware
-Freeway ultra
-Bga ram 3x 128mb, 3x 256mb
-Gf3 ti500 agp
-gf2 mx 400 pci (for the pentium mmx 233 aiming for the stars thread)
one of the 256 bga sticks is only detecting as 128mb though on this board because it’s single sided high density which sucks
Oddly, the other two 256mb sticks seem to be working in dual sided configuration which I had trouble with previously on the non ultra. Dono if the ram or the board is making it work or both.

Btw, this suggests that 768mb could be stable on this board if only I had another matched stick.

But anyway.
It all seems to be set up and working except a few issues
I can’t seem to get the cards to display from dvi at post, only later in windows.
And I’m not sure what driver to use for each card I need one for win 9x and xp
I tried downloading the 7.76? Driver but it won’t install on the gf3 are you guys using that for gf2 cards? I tried force installing it for a gf3. Won’t work.
I managed to get the card working on forceware 40 and results were about what my 9800 pro got. Maybe a little less.
Someone mentioned that the high scores you guys are getting are from a driver glitch not actual gained performance? What are your thoughts on that?” -k6 aiming for the stars thread.

You can edit the .inf and add lines so that it (7.76) will install automatically, or you can take the slackers way out and just manually install it. Re: Oldest driver for Geforce 3?

@Sphere478, you can check the core voltage without a CPU in the board to see if those swiches are indeed like you say they are. Then that can be added to the info in UR. Also, I'll try and decipher what you wrote for the CPU speed settings earlier.

Yeah, I know. Middle pin on the notched corner.

I posted this info on UR in content and rom dump also included a voltage measuring point Pic if I recall.

Although slightly risky, CBROM should do that considering your bios is Award.

And if my memory serves me right... it was something along the lines of "cbrom biosfile.bin /logo yourlogo.bmp".

Not very sure of this as it's WAY long since I last tinkered with Award BIOS to that extent and that was already in the P4 era (with a ASUS P4P800-VM that took a beating almost daily from the amount of BIOS chips I was testing on it lmao)

EDIT: Here's a link from Supermicro (yes, they apparently tell you how to replace your BIOS logo with whatever you want!) that explains the procedure:

https://www.supermicro.com/support/faqs/data_ … hange_steps.doc

Disregard the OSB steps as you don't need them on your BIOS (it predates the OSB stuff by quite a few years at this point)
(FYI the OSB logos used in newer Award BIOS are basically those small Intel logos that show up in a square, black or white, during POST. These were also used in the P4 era to show what CPU you were running.)
