98se would run ok, XP might if enough ram was available but even with 128meg it might not be a great experience.

IF you are going to code you might want to dual boot 98 with Linux and use Linux for your coding but it really depends on what language you intend to code with.

Windows 2000?

For gaming ?

Would work for coding well enough.

I actually do most my Win9x gaming in Windows 2000 now. 100 times more stable then even the most stable 9x install and slightly better compatibility and much more lightweight then XP for older 9x games.
Although personally I consider it only for something like P2 300 or above as 9x is of course still less resource intensive.

Win98SE does seem like the obvious choice, especially as it will allow you to boot into dos mode if your playing dos games

I was under teh assumption that Win 2k has issues with Direct 3d games .. or did MS finally resolve that issue ?

I'm not sure if ever really did. I also duel booted 9x/2k back in the day 9x for gaming and 2k for work
Maybe because NT4 was fresh in our minds, and real early games (return fire in my library) have issues but 99.9% work fine for me now.
Need for Speed 3,4, Porsche also don't work for me but people have got that working in XP so It's me not doing something right
