Not that it matters but I'd of gone for 98FE if we are trying something different.

ME is good for late 9x builds where dos support isn't needed (even if it is evil)
98SE is the best choice really, but how many 98SE PC's do you need (more always more)
98FE is a strange middle ground between 98SE and 95 and servers no real purpose
95 is best for low end PC's like 486 and early Pentium's

98FE is the black sheep of the windows family, but under the hood .. its not that different from 98SE at least not different enough to make it worth installing.

I do agree but then you end up yet another 98SE build which as you said, does get a bit boring after awhile. Practicality has no place in this line of conversation.

OS2 Warp 4.52 would be a fun diversion from Windows, Ive been looking at building a rig to run it and a K6-2 would certainly be more than what it needs, bonus here is that its very different from any version of windows and fits the not practical tag nicely too.

well I got some scores, little disappointed though, its barely faster than my celeron 333 with a Riva TNT2 M64 in 3dmark2000 and gets destroyed in 99

3D Mark 99 3D Mark 2000
2679 1109 Celeron 333
1999 1162 K6-2 450

Also turns out the card was mislabled its an MX440

Dissapoonted with results?, time for a 3+

Order a 570 2+ and mod it. 😀 (see sig)

At least that quadro2 should be one of the best cards for benchmark scores. So that’s already good.

I was gonna recommend ME 😀 idk why it got such a bad wrap but it works good on my setups

so its not a quadro2, i mis indentified it, its an MX440 so i had to use the 28 series drivers, model number is appearantly used for the MXR and MX440 from Nvidia, of P70 for the PCB way to go Nvidia circa 2002

Well I redid my Pentium II setup, it kept crashing so for the reinstall its 98FE, I was gonna do Windows 95 but as soon as i accessed my network drives it just crashed, and it took me 2 hours of fiddleing for it to even get that far, so 98FE on it

For the AMD K6-2 or 3 I perform this setup steps for Win98se as per Phils recommendations.

1) Install Win98se
2) Install video driver.
3) install sound driver.
4) install network driver
5) install USB update driver ( Maybe do this step second )
5) Download SP3 and install the Main update drivers and reboot
6) install Directx from SP3 update and reboot.
7) your done.

Works great for me and is very stable.

Download u98seSP3.exe Service pack from here:

As per Phils computer lab recommendations.
I just select and install the “Main file updates” and “Directx” from SP3 update.
I don’t install all the updates in SP3 just select the “main updates”
The computer appears to work very stable this way.
I am not sure about any of the other updates within the SP3 package.
