Hi guys. This week I came across a tired old Compaq Deskpro 2000 that was in service up until a couple of months ago, driving a book and newspaper printing press machine. I came across it accidentally while going to see some 15" CRT monitors. Apparently, all this hardware was put up for sale in the local classifieds by the owner of the printing shop who upgraded the printing press machine, and all the monitors and computers became obsolete.

The PC came with no hard drive (the owner would not sell it to me) and no optical drive, but I saw it working - in fact it was turned on when I got there, and we used it to test all the CRT monitors. As you would expect it was pretty dirty, inside and outside, but in otherwise great condition. No broken or scratched plastic, no corrosion or dents on the metal cover or the back of the PC. There is however a bit of corrosion inside the PC, on the metal bar on top of the riser card as well as the are of the case cover that was in contact with said metal bar.

I took the PC apart and cleaned it:

The CPU fan is a generic aftermarket socket 7 cpu cooler. The deskpro originally came with a large passive aluminum heatsink, and in some configurations an 80mm case fan. My deskpro had none. I guess at one point somebody decided to replace the passive heatsink with an actively cooled one. It's also possible that this was done by the manufacturers of the printing press, as in some situations the PC itself sits inside a metallic cabinet or desk - or some sort of cover, and gets poor ventilation. The fan was on the noisy side, so I took it apart and cleaned it, then "injected" wd-40 and then white grease using my air compressor right into the bearing.

The computer came with a 120MHz pentium CPU and 16MB of ram. When I saw it at the seller's place, it seemed to be running some custom version of linux or unix? with a graphical user interface and specialised software. Lucky for me it also came with a COAST module. I say lucky because I'm not sure compaq uses off the shelf COAST modules - they might use custom modules like IBM did with their valuepoint series.

After removing the motherboard I cleaned it thoroughly with IPA on both sides, then desoldered the CMOS battery (BR2335) and soldered a standard CR2032 coin cell battery holder in place. The BR2335 has 2 legs for positive and one for negative, so a regular coin cell holder will not fit right off the bat, but some of the dingyer ones (like the one in the picture) will if you bend the legs inward a bit. Before soldering the battery holder on I made sure the two positive terminals have continuity, and they do. If they did not I would have soldered a bodge wire on the back of the board.

Then it was time for some upgrades. I replaced the 120MHz CPU with a 200MHz pentium. I made sure the chip I installed is single voltage since I could not find a CPU voltage jumper / setting anyware on the motherboard, and also added an additional 32MB of Compaq EDO dram (2x16mb kit). For a hard drisk drive I chose an 8GB fujitsu because it's the closest drive I had to the 10GB BIOS limit this PC seems to have. I know there is a bios update someware for Deskrpro 2000 PCs, but I found that updating the bios on these is a huge pain in the butt so I went for a drive that would work with the PC as is. I also picked out an optical drive that reads and ejects, and matches the color of the plastic cover (if not the vintage of the PC).

I then copied over some drivers and a windows 95 osr2 instalation package, as well as norton commander and some other utilities. I used Speedsys and Hwinfo to verify that everything works as it should:

As for sound, I went with a Sound Blaster 16 CT2290 since I had one on hand, but I might replace it with a Guillemot Maxi Gamer 64, provided it works correctly in the Compaq. I also plan to add a voodoo 1 and a frontal case fan to help cool the voodoo card, but I'll be doing that, as well as running some benchmarks and games on monday.

This little compaq has been working for all it's life, now it's time to play!

You have to redo the posts with pictures, by uploading them to vogons via file attachment, then submit your edited posts. Then we can see pictures.

Using external photo websites deprecates the photos after few clicks or termination date whichever comes first, so don't use them, using the forum's host instead will guarantee the photos will not go away ever.

Cheers,

Great Northern aka Canada.

Cheers,

Actually I uploaded the pictures directly to vogons on this thread. Vogons was down for a bit today - and when it came back up, it seems that pictures attached to posts no longer work.... I tried re-uploading the pics but the "attachments" button seems to be missing. Maybe a mod or admin can shed some light on this.
