Yeah it's not a feature yet, mine was a feature idea.

Just have the audio cable to make up now - my second SB16 doesn't have an easy to use MPC-2 cd input, only one of those tiny JST style connectors, so I'll have to find a cable in my collection somewhere. MIDI is again handled by an M-Audio UNO which is zip tied to the rear of the case, connected to the MPU401 ISA card.

Damn. Just got everything connected up and it seems like the M-Audio Uno model I've gotten my hands on this time is one of those "that may be unreliable for use as a receiver with MT32-pi" as listed in the wiki:

Every time a game starts I get a "Unexp. MIDI Status!" error message, no game text displayed on the MT-32 emulated display and all of the instruments are wrong and/or stuck. My other Uno works flawlessly 🙁

I seems I'll need to get my hands on a Roland UM One mk2 or other reliable USB interface.

That's a nice clean design, I do recommend that you consider adding buttons though. Otherwise you can't switch from MT-32 to soundfont mode, unless maybe you use MT32-pi-control software.

Here's what I've been working on for a few weeks now - my MT32-pi case which is designed to look like a shrunken regular MT32, but with the bigger 20x2 LCD.

IMG_0285.jpg

IT's been designed in Fusion 360, but the DAC and MIDI input PCB are currently just on some PCB stripboard that I knocked together. Digitising the physical objects is time consuming work, especially when a print of the top and bottom parts takes 6 hours each. The DAC's audio jack doesn't fit right for instance, but it's close enough to work.
IMG_0293-2.jpg

2021-04-02 18_23_43-Window.png

The Pi3 is screwed in there to be an MT-32PI forever, but on the underside I can get to the micro SD card to swap it out, and the MicroSD card can't fall into the case (very annoying when that happens).

IMG_0299-2.jpg

The front wouldn't look right with the 3d printing layer lines, and my attempts to print text with the 3d printer didn't work out, so I used my Brother QL700 label printer to print out the matte paper label, and the glossy plastic label. The end result looks pretty fantastic to me, but I'd love it if there was a better way to print the matte front part. I Was thinking maybe a PCB with no traces on it, in a black matte finish. That would be cheap-ish and the silkscreen would work perfectly for the button labels.

Something I'd like to look at next is making a PCB that doesn't sit on top of the CPU so it can cool better, there's room in the case for that. But this one works and I can use it now 😀

Planning to share? I'd love to buil my own MT32-Pi using your designs.

Yep, I need to make a schematic of my protoboard and get a PCB designed, then I can share it 😀

Replacement Roland UM One mk2 arrived today, swapped out the M-Audio dongle, plugged this into the MM401 card and everything works (well, everything that doesn't need an interrupt-driven MPU401 interface - i.e. Gateway/Homeworld doesn't work, but that's a known MM401 issue - my MPU-IPC-T on the DX/DLC machine works with it fine).

That's two embedded MT32-Pi installations complete and working nicely. I've not bothered with the soundfont synthesis side of things yet - anyone got a nice Sound Canvas GS / Yamaha XG sounding soundfont?

Wow, these look very good! The bay version is really useful and makes the PC look more professional, ^
while the secondone has a nice hi-fi look! It would match a vintage amp very well! ^^

First time posting on Vogons, I normally hang out on the Overclockers Australia forums.

Anyway, I made a 3D-printed 50%-scale MT32 for mt32-pi, and some breakout PCBs for the front and rear panels, which I call the Minisynth 32: https://github.com/grantek/minisynth32 OCAU thread.

I'm still spending most of my free time printing and refining, but I think it's acceptable "beta" quality now. I only just found out that the Pi uses M2.5 mounting bolts, so that's the most recent change to the case that I haven't fully tested yet.

Hey Grant I saw over on your thread on OC's that you reworked the PCB and faceplate? Will you be uploading that new revision to your Github? Great work. It looks fantastic. Oh and do you have a BOM?

Disregard both questions. I'm not super familiar with how Github works....I found your other branch with the updated files and a helpful BOM.

Yeah, the "10-button" version is still a work in progress, I've been having issues getting consistent prints with my 3D printer (using a smooth flexible PEI sheet). I had issues with adhesion with PLA, and getting a nice-looking faceplate with PETG.

I tried printing the faceplate face-down on the bed and it worked better than expected, but the extrusion lines are clearly visible and with PETG I still had gaps in extrusion that would still show up after a light sanding. The version I posted on OCAU has hard-printed buttons except for the 2 functional ones, but to allow face-down printing I'm leaning towards making the "fully clickable" version the default:

Using individually-printed buttons, the small square ones were very loose and wouldn't sit straight, so I put all of the buttons onto a sheet (again PETG which is very flexible for the backing but is hard to print fine details with), and that works really well:

Over the next few days I'll be swapping back to PLA and doing some more tests to try and get a good finish (and to test how the button sheet works with it), but I really like Thermalwrong's idea of using a 2D-printed label on the face, which will hide any printing artifacts.

I still haven't got my batch of front panel PCBs yet, so I'm waiting on that before actually merging the "10but" branch into the main branch. I've uploaded some more recent work to the 10but branch though.

I used to have access to a nice clone i3 3D printer, but all of these prints have been on my personal Ender 3, with black PLA that seems to shrink on cooling more than usual. If anyone with a better printer manages to make a nicer looking faceplate, I'd love to see pictures 😀

Has anyone considered using a black PCB for the front plate around the small LCD/OLED area? Using the silkscreen for the big
'Roland Multi-timbre Sound Module MT-32' and leave a hole for the screen area - bonus points if you order this in a multi-project pcb order. It has a nice reflective sheen to it that kinda mimicks the feel of the original unit.

Here's an example of a face plate of a 'weecee' tiny unit. The conductive material can be used as another available color:

nEV2Phr.png

I'm loving a few of the projects I'm seeing here and I'm absolutely going for it for a very portable mt-32pi with a reduced box look.

Ha, should have reread your post. Your design is my favorite and hits all my needs in size/functionality/aesthetics.
Is your project shared somewhere and if no, would you consider it? I'm definitely down to check some PCB costs that would include the button area, but I could live with just the screen area.
I have to fight down the need to use a 20x4 screen especially since it's supported.....

This thread has given me some great ideas. Love the thought of it sitting inside my PC and being able to route the audio out from the SB or MT32 to my speakers with a flick of a switch. Think I am going to need to get a display the is larger and is closer to the original MT32.
