Could D-Fend perhaps cache the thumbnails so that it doesn't have to re-scale the images every time you click on a game in the list? The delay is noticeable enough on a 2.5GHz Intel Core Duo machine that I stopped using the thumbnails / cover download features.

Hi there-

I would like to make an installer package, but I don't seem to have the option "Make Installer Package" available.. I've checked under every heading, but the help document says it should be under "Profile".

Furthermore I have installed the NSIS 64-bit package.

And one more issue -- when I tried to transfer a program along with making a portable installation, everything seemed to go correctly, except the actual game files weren't transferred...

Could you make it possible to stop the process of making packages (Esc)?
There's one more thing. If you use a CD image and it comes with a .cue (and .ccd + .sub) only .cue file will be added to the package...

@HunterZ:
Adding a complete image caching infrastructure would be a quite comprehensive - and therefore is out of my available time at the moment. For many games and many screenshots we would need either many cache files or some intelligent way of adding and removing cache data from a single big file. The size of the screenshots in the preview area can be configured in the setup dialog, so I would need to store the size of the screenshot when caching. Also I would need to take care of updated original image files etc. At the moment I'm working nearly every day for my daytime job, so spending that much time for DFR is really not possible for me.

@lukeman3000:
DFR is a 32-bit program, so it's only scanning the default program files folder for NSIS. On a 32-bit Windows installation the 32-bit API function for getting the program files folder name brings "C:\Program files". On a 64-bit Windows installation the 32-bit API function for getting the program files folder name brings "C:\Program files (x86)".

To help you with your second problem I would need some more information. But I would guess you have changed the DFR default folders for games etc. in some uncommon way. If the games folder is a subfolder of the DFR main program folder, everything should be fine for a portable installation.

@SysRQ:
Adding some user-break functions to the archive file creation process would require nearly a complete rewrite of these functions because we would need to ensure file system clean-ups which are done when the process is done, will also be done when breaking. Even more the archive creation consists of multiple steps and all of them are done by different parts of the program code, so all of them would need to be changed. May be I can do this in the next release.

I'm no expert in CD images so I don't always know exactly which files DFR should guess to belong to the file registered in the drives dialog. But you can add any file and also folders to the additional program files / program folders boxes on the "Directories" page of the profile editor dialog. Files and folders listed here are respected when transfering or uninstalling the game.

Hello Alexander, I'm passing on a question from a user on the Facebook Group.

Ilia Marvin says
"Guys, please tell me, how to use dosbox native linux version in DFR? I just have a troubles with screen resolution (no full screen). Wine mode is enabled, but it doesn't work..."

Thanks!

Hi Ranthalion75, I have never tested D-Fend Reloaded under Linux myself. So there is not much I can say about this. D-Fend Reloaded has some limited Linux/Wine support. If using D-Fend Reloaded and also DOSBox under Wine no special setup at all should be needed. But if using D-Fend Reloaded under Linux/Wine together with a native DOSBox Linux version, some of the settings offered on the "Wine" page of the setup dialog are needed.

Problems with DOSBox isself are usually not related to D-Fend Reloaded. If DOSBox fullscreen is not working, you should figure out which settings Linux DOSBox needs for fullscreen and then using them in D-Fend Reloaded.

I haven't tested DFR on Windows 8 yet, but I haven't heard of any general problems running DFR under Windows 8. So I think DFR should run under Windows 8, too. So with this little information ("I'm getting access violations") I can't help you. In the past the most problems running DFR were not raised by DFR itself but my some other programs, for example by programs trying to change the system GUI etc.

I am having these same "access violation" errors on DFR 1.3.3 on my Win 7 x64 Pro machine, pretty frequently. Each time it occurs, the result is a flood of error messages that can only be stopped by killing dfend.exe with the Windows process manager.

Here are the exact errors I've been getting:

The first occurs occasionally when I click on "Download game information" in the Program Information section of the profile editor. This message immediately comes up:

"Error reading data from dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net"

Once I dismiss that message and close the profile editor, this error message starts flooding in:

"Access violation at address 00404712 in module 'DFend.exe'. Read of address 01764D52."

The other occurance happens randomly in the main DFR interface, sometimes when I click on a game, but also if I simply alt-tab back to the D-Fend window from another application. Here is the error message that floods in:

"Access violation at address 00404712 in module 'DFend.exe'. Read of address 00000057."

Overall, I'd say these errors occur maybe 10-15 minutes after starting DFR. I am running a core i7 3770 with 16 gigs of RAM. Let me know if there's any other info I can provide that would help.

@flang:
Sorry, I cannot reproduce this problem. It's working for me.
The "Error reading data from dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net" message looks like DFR has some problems getting data from the internet. May be some firewall on your system is blocking DFR from accessing thet net?

@sst:
It looks like the scene.org metalink demo download function is down. That's very sad but there is nothing I can do about this.

There's no firewall on my machine that I'm aware of. I'm not really familiar with Windows firewall and how it works - would there be a way to test it? When I go to dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net in my web browser, the page loads up fine with no issues.

I just found out that you can actually run jar files from D-Fend Reloaded. Just choose "All files" in the filter box in the file selection screen in the "add windows game" dialogue. In a later version I'd suggest adding jar-files as an option in the filter section. By the way the reason I needed it was to add the java version of Micropolis in my profiles list... 😀

Hi Alexander, any chance to add the settings from the Hardware > Sound > Volume page to the Edit Multiple Profiles function, or is there another way for me to bulk edit these values in all profiles? Otherwise I'm faced with manually editing Left and Right Master Volume values for 1600+ profiles 🙁

Using DFR 1.3.3, standard install.

Hi dosdog,
I have added "Volume settings for the multiple profiles editor" to my todo for the next version of DFR. But I cannot tell any date when the next version will be ready. Perhaps by fall this year.

Hello everybody,
today I have some good news for you: Last weekend I have started working on the next release of D-Fend Reloaded. Because there are not too many big things to do this time, the next release will be a smaller step again again (version number 1.3.4). There is no release candidate of 1.3.4 yet, but surely will be next month. Here you can already see what I have done so far.

First of all, thanks for this amazing and great program, it's simply awesome 😀 That said, here are a few feature suggestions that'd be pretty cool to have

  • Being able to make packages out of windows profiles - As of now, it isn't possible, I know, but most of my old windows games are portable anyway. I am often transferring packagaes between seperate machines (e.g. when I am at work with my laptop, to continue playing a game) so this feature would help a lot. Same goes to other setups btw like ScummVM. I guess this shouldn't be too hard to do considering that the code is already there for DOS games.
  • Coverflow - I am sure you have heard of Coverflow from the iPhone/iPad landscape mode when using the music player. Something like that would be awesome for D-Fend Reloaded... it's just a gimmick, not really needed but it would be cool. 😀
  • Colorizing game entries in the list - I'd consider it very useful to mark games in my (very large list, more than 200 entries) with a certain color (free to choose from a predefined list for example) to remind me if I have played the game already, if I am in progress or if I have already finished it. I am sure these kind of marks might also be useful for other people.
  • Personal look of the video/sound/image box - I know you are already able to customize the look with choosing a background color and so... but I'd prefer other options too, like changing the border between the pictures, like removing the screenshot name, etc. Maybe we could introduce a template system or more options. It's also not high priority, but D-Fend Reloaded is my favorite program and making it even better is never a wrong decision 😀

So thanks for reading, looking forward to your reply!
Best regards,
DarkTemplar

I use = D-Fend Reloaded, "v1.3.4rc1", Portable structure.

I have just uploaded version 1.3.4rc1. If everything is fine with this version, we can have 1.3.4final very soon.

I have updated the "French Canada", "French" translation. See files included.

I'm having a problem with one game and I hope you can help me. People from the Scumm VM forum told me to ask someone involved with D-Fend...
As you probably know, DFR can be used to run not just DOS games, but also anything executable through Scumm VM and also Windows games. This is convenient - you can access all your games from the same "place", but another reason while I personally put non-DOS profiles in DFR too is my certain childishness: I just fell in love with DFR's screenshot option and I keep screenshot colections for each game. In case of Windows games, I just put screenshots somewhere while playing the game, then select the best ones, but them in the game's folder in the "Capture" superfolder and all works fine.
Then I downloaded one of the games from the series of educational adventure games about a boy called Pajama Sam and it just didn't work (more in a while). It's not a DOS game, but a Windows-based one (if I get it right, Scumm VM is not an operational system emulator, but a script emulator), plus there is a nice thing: lots of ScummVM-compatible games are nowadays made available without their executable files, which is not a problem for the emulator. This way they can only be run through Scumm VM, but are available (and some of them were fairly rare).
Reposting my question from another forum:

As usual, no original version, this is the Scumm VM-compatible version without exe files. However, unlike in other games prepared to be run in Scumm VM, I can't run it through D-Fend Reloaded. There is even no error message, the program just behaves as if there was nothing clickable - it just doesn't do anything at all when I try to run this game's profile.

I CAN run it in "raw" Scumm VM, but here's the problem. You know I'm childish when it comes to screenshot collection... and it was in vain. Since the game wasn't opened through D-Fend Reloaded, the usual Alt-S capture keys didn't work. I had to capture screenshots with Irfan View, first storing them in a folder I use for capturing screenshots from non-DOS games (or, more precisely, those that can't be run with either DFR-DOSBox or DFR-Scumm - mostly Windows-based ones such as Dizzy AGE fan games). OK, I did it... but when I try to put them into the game's DFR "Capture" folder, they just don't appear. I can't even import files - when I right-click the area where screenshots should be visible, every single option is gray. How can I run the game through DFR or make the screenshot folder recognizable for the profile as in all other games?
The titles in DFR and in "folder tree" or how is it called aren't identical ("Pajama Sam: You Are What You Eat..." vs. "Pajama Sam You Are What You Eat" - the program just removes punctuation), but that's also the case with some other games and has never lead to any such problems.

Any advice? Does anyone know what may be the source of the problem? I just don't understand it (but I'm not a specialist, which may or may not be visible in my way of writing about games and emulators) and so it makes me angry even more.
