Give me an example of something to type to replace surface? and why would it work before and not now?

Check the history and see if something got installed recently...

Also post your DOSBox config file, maybe we spot something and have a suggestion...

Now this is not specific to your situation, but these are the settings I always recommend when people ask about aspect ratio, letter boxing, resolution or whatever.

Try these and maybe it fixes your issues as well!

scaler=normal2x
output=openglnb
aspect=true
