hello

i am new here

i use dosbox to play some midi files with the gus
(driver 4.11 with 1.61 ppl)

evrything is working ok
and in debug modus playmidi can also play
recent midis without crashes or hangs 😀

but i have a small problem
some midi files r too big for the gus memory
i know the "old" gus uses 512-1024k ram.

is there a way to increase the onboard memory ?
the gus pnp could handle up to 8 mb

please say that its possible to add more ram and please say how to do it

thx

wow thats a fast reply
thx

the question is:
is it worth the work and
will the gus in dosbox be able to handle more than 1mb ram ?

seems what i want: a classic gus with more than 1 mb ram was not possible with a real gus.

i guess the gus in dosbox is a classic one and not the pnp version which can handle 8 mb.

Yeh you'd need to implement the whole amd interwave stuff. Guess it's easier to just run a better midi output engine with support for large soundfonts.

yep but interwave (gus pnp) may sound a bit different form old gus
other patches....

may be its possible to add 2mb ram to the old gus with dosbox gus source code (even when only 1 mb was possible for a real gus classic)
may be dosbox will support different gus models in the future like with soundblaster today 😀
gus classic
gus max
gus pnp
gus ace
gus cd3
gus extreme

😀

As long as you're only interested in playing MIDI files, I seem to recall that there's a GUS emulator that works with Win9x. (I have no idea how to find it, though.)

I believe it's this one: http://www.deinmeister.de/gusemu/. I have never used it, however, so I don't know if it actually works.

PS: Interesting, just found a very old, related VOGONS topic from you, Jorpho: GUSemu difficulties

Ooohh, the pain......
