he he, the floppys look funny, too. I have to try how it'll look in smaller sizes.

Chaosfish: I like the futura font, only now that I look at it again, the other icons are more "dos-like" 😀

Problem there is that Windows command prompt is a "C:\" so:

1. Using "C:\" as an icon would promote more confusion from users thinking that DosBox is the "Command Prompt" dosbox.

2. "C:\" is used by MS alot as noted above and DosBox shouldn't be associated with anything MS. (Even tho it does run DOS games....)

Perhaps "A>" should be used instead. The default DOS prompt doesn't include the path anyway. It may have been used by MS, but the "A>" prompt originates in CP/M.

Well then, how about a 3d box with a black window with "DOSBOX" written on it with a arrow pointing to a picture of a computer for the Setup icon, if there is a setup.exe associated with DOSbox, and just a box with the black window labeled DOSBOX for dosbox.exe

Why not? MS isn't the devil so its not going to hurt anyone. After all most people did use "ms"-dos for their old games so "C:" has become the flag for it. Just look at the abandonware site "C:DOS" 😉

I'm just saying that we don't have to take desperate measures to avoid MS related icons.

Hi again,
I don't want to seem rude or nagging, but to Qbix:
I would really love it if you say your opinion about the icon. I will do whatever I can to change it so you'll find it good enough to use. Heck, I'll even make a complete different one, just tell me how you want it to be like 😀
I'm only saying that because you said back then that DOSBox doesn't have an icon only because you still haven't seen a good one yet. And it'd be a honour giving my contribution to DOSBox.

Sorry ChaosFish
I simply forgot about the matter.
My mind is occupied with lots of small things.
I will pin this thread so it will not be forgotten.
I agree that an icon is nice to have and you seem to have the necissairy skills in order to create one to my liking. I will get back to this thread.

New version!

The colors of the box are better now, it doesn't look faint anymore.
Obviously the letters are different now.

I only made the 32x32 icon so far, so after I'll get feedback from Qbix and if he will like this I will work on other sizes. The problem with the other sizes is that I didn't find a suitable font yet, but it's workable.

To really get an idea of how the icons feel like and see which color you like the best, extract the attached zip file to desktop and see for yourself (try with different wallpapers to get a better idea).

Slight improvement:
The icon now has a (slight) black border, so it looks better on all backgrounds (especially blue ones). You may ignore the attachments in previous post 😉

the tiny black border is fine. However I would appricate it if the text looked more blended to the background.

This is funny. One of the first things I did after I installed DOSBox was look for a good icon - I didn't find one...

@ ChaosFish - I know how much work goes into even making small things like icons. I appreciate the efforts. Personally I like 4.1.

Thanks Drek, I like 4.1 too 😀
Qbix, I'm not sure what you meant by more blending. Do you want the text to be a part of the box? Like a wooden embossment? I'll try to make something, but it will help if you could be a bit more specific.

Ha, I actually meant 4.1 orange, didn't notice they were all 4.1. 😀

They're all good, but the orange is the one I like best.

Well then, feel free to download the .ICO and use it then 😉
Again, to get a real idea you should download it and view on the Desktop (rather than on VOGONS).

Have done so, somehow missed the icons at the bottom - thought they were all pngs.

Nice looking icon, much nicer than the old boring MS default. 😀

Ok Qbix!!

I think it looks much better now!

So, changes:
* As Qbix wisely suggested, the text look more "blended" (a little wood texture I made).
* Cound't find suitable fonts for other sizes, so I just made the other sizes' fonts myself 😀
* A neat 16x16 icon
* Also everything else improved a little bit

So, what do you think Qbix? 😀

P.S. btw, I let go of the 128x128 icon. I don't think it's actually needed.
