It is a box.
It is old.
It reminds many games like: Alone in The Dark, Monkey Island, Heroes of Might and Magic, Betrayal at Krondor, etc.
DOSBox is actually a treasure chest, full of different emulated sound cards, graphic cards etc.
And it allows us to play our old treasures - old dos games.
And it looks nice.

Well it's simple, easy to understand but I dunno....Personally I think "chest" when looking at it...and I see your point about it being a treasure chest. Mabye I'm just overanalyzing.

Nice concept.

I think, though, an icon shouldn't have much "hidden meanings". Although it's cool, it doesn't remind me anything of DOS at first sight, and first sight is the most important thing about an icon.

So if you could make an icon that somehow combines a box and DOS at the same time, I think that would be better.

It's nice and sure it holds some work involved but I agree with what ChaosFish said...

And moving to DOSBox General, by the way (what has this to do with Development?)

8 GB GeForce GTX 1070 G1 Gaming (Gigabyte)

I agree that it should have both dos and box.

Although if you look at other icons it is not that often used.
Generally the icon is so small that it mostly allows only 4 things:

1. A large letter - it could be "D"
-Opera has "O"
-Internet Explorer has "e"
-Alcohol has "A"

2. Part of a name or the whole name - it could be:
DOS
BOX
-LanChat
-Gens
-mIRC

3. A picture - can be a box
-ACDSee has an eye
-WinRAR has books
-Total Commander has a floppy
-eMule has a mule

4. Combinations of two pictures also exists
-Nero has a CD in flames
-WinImage has a floppy with a camera

5. As a DOS part is rather abstract so it requires a combination of a picture and text which is rather difficult.

And do you have it in an icon format? 😉

Mine's similar, actually - just a black box with a c:\> command prompt in it.

What about a building block viewed from one corner with one letter on each visible face? Now, modify the block so that it is a cardboard box.

I could, problem being is that at such a small size an icon is a little hard to detail. (In other words that was a real box in its original size but once I shrunk it down it was hard to see) 😅

Didn't see that one but I was just thinking one face whereas that one uses a 3 dimensional block?

I made this. It lacks quality, so think of it as an icon idea 😀
The space inside the "O" is transparent (i.e. you can view the desktop through it)
