Alright, so I just thought about playing one of my all time favorite games the other day - thought I'd install it nice and simple - 3 minute process right?

😢 WRONG. This is a complete nightmare!!!! I downloaded DOSBOX (I'm entirely new to it) played around with it for about an hour, got the basics. Checked out the threads on these forums for people also having trouble with Final Unity (And I see I'm not alone). I followed up on the posts about some new extender (DOS32A) from this thread here: STTNG: A Final Unity Installation Guide for DosBox.

So I figured I'd go ahead and install this "extender" to make the program run smoother than it would regularly. I did everything the post said, but for some reason when I type "SB /R /NBSTTNG.new STTNG.ovl" it returns, ""cannot find file 'C:\dos32a\binw\dos32a.exe''. The command pathway IS correct - so I'm lost? I'm about ready to give up, but I really want to play the game again. Any suggestions? I'm a complete noob here, so I don't understand a lot of the tech babble on the forums (But I"m trying). Thanks! 😀

Here are my specs:
Latest version of Dosbox
AMD 64 3200+
GeForce 7600 GT
Windows XP OS

I think thats everything useful, thanks again.

Did you add the DOS32a\binw directory to your PATH in DosBox?

Hmm - Thats a good question - again you'll have to forgive me, I'm still learning this. Upon opening Dosbox, I typed "Set dos32a=c:\dos32a" - but I gather that it isn't the same thing. If it isn't correct, what should I have done? I'm grateful for your help 😀 😀

What I usually do to invoke it is:

SET DOS32A=C:\DOS32A
C:\DOS32A\BINW\SB /R XXXXX.EXE

That's all. You need to type a little more, not a big problem.

Forgot to explain that I always use DOS32a outside of DOSBox, using the NTVDM (cmd.exe).

Alright, so I THINK I understand (lol). Again, I apologize, completely new to this. I was told that I had to move the SB.exe from the DOS32a\binw directory to the STTNG directory. Is that not still valid here? Do I need to put the DOS32a directory INTO the STTNG directory? I'm so confused here - I realize this is probably simple but there are a few details I must be missing out on -this is why I hate programming and manipulating files .... aggghhhhh 😖

If you put the DOS32a\binw directory in your PATH statement then you do not need to worry about copying the DOS32a files anywhere.

The PATH statement enables the ability to execute programs if your not in the actual program's directory. So if your in the STTNG directory and you wish to run SB.exe then you can do so without having to copy any DOS32A files.

Add the statement "PATH=Z:\;C:\DOS32A\binw" to the autoexec section of your dosbox.conf

Thanks, by the way, for everyone's help. I'm slowly but surely getting this. So I've done all the steps that everyone has given me, but now, when I try to bind the new STTNG file with the new extender and replace the STTNG.ovl file, it says its an illegal command! haha - is there an easy way for idiots like me to figure this out? I have looked everywhere all over the internet and different websites tell me different ways to do all this. What I wouldn't give to hire someone for this job!

Anyway, now stuck with an illegal command, and still hoping I'm going in the right direction. Here's a screen shot of where I am. Many many MANY thanks for everyones help.

Just do it the easy way: copy sb.exe and dos32a.exe to the STTNG folder and run SB.exe there - the whole path thing is unnecessairy. Illegal command means DOSBOX can't find the file you're trying to run.

In your picture you mounted your c:\ as C:\STFU yet in your path you put C:\DOS32A.

Is the DOS32A directory in the STFU directory? If not then you cannot run the files in the DOS32A directory.

I just put DOS32A in DosBox and put in the proper PATH statement so your doing something wrong. Using PATH isn't "unncessary", in fact it is necessary unless you want to clutter all of your folders with the same files everytime you wish to run the files (Unless you type in the whole path of where the file is every time you wish to execute it).
