A weird and likely extremely rare Cirrus Logic Combo PCI card with IDE controllers and CL-GD5428 video chip. I have never seen this chip on a PCI card. Even if it doesn't work it's an interesting one for the collection.

It seems to be a standard 6800.

I have been able to dig up some info on the GPU

https://www.gpuzoo.com/GPU-Gainward/FX_PowerP … 46200-6077.html

Its faster than the stock 6800 and quite a few users have managed to overclock the core and memory to Ultra speeds, golden samples seem to be binned by Gainward.

Ill know more once I get it, I have another Gainward 6800 GT with the silly dual slot cooler on it, I might try overclocking them and see which one manages to get closest to Ultra speeds.

Gainward golden samples were always best of their class.

Do you think it would be better with the dual slot twin fan cooler off the Gainward 6800 GT ?

In theory the bigger cooler should fit it ok.

Don't know if it's the right one, but there's an entry here for the 1.1 board: https://www.ultimateretro.net/en/motherboards/331#downloads , with a manual: https://www.ultimateretro.net/motherboard/man … 12227563484.pdf . It looks like the Stason and MicroHouse entries get their column headings wrong.

Thanks for info, I am going to check it out as seems to match the board in my machine. But I need to find a good Intel 486DX2-66 CPU first...

How the hell does that work? GD5428 is a non PCI chip, and even if it was you would need a PCI bridge chip on there.
Is U2 some kind of PCI to ISA bridge? with IDE being basic non DMA ISA IDE realized using U1/U3 PAL chips?

Got this combo the other day, it's a Chaintech 486 SLD / 486 SLP board with a Cyrix 486 DX4 100 and 16 MB ram.

It's not just the difference in MHz but also shaders and texture units between a standard 6800 vs GT/Ultra.

It's great board, too!
1MB cache is supported and the chipset has a ton of features you can tweak. I would say it's the kind of board that's the best you can have, if you don't feel PCI bus to be "correct" for 486. 😉

Very similar board in terms of capabilities:
QDI V4S471/G locks up with 1024kB of cache [Fixed! Nicer Award BIOS available!]

Oh I’m aware, the Gt will have a slightly higher fill rate due to the 4 extra pixel shaders and 1 vertex unit but I’m not worried about fill rates for this test.

The GT is just a slower clocked Ultra so I expect it to hit higher speeds, but the binned 6800 might have some surprising results.

Hey, thanks for the info! Nice to know it's a good board. I was looking for a good vlb board for some time now. I want to build a vlb based 486 with a dx2 cpu. For PCI based 486 I would go with a 5x86 AMD or Cyrix.

There is some interesting jumper config going on this board, not sure if I have seen that before. Looks a bit proprietary but it seems they at least had an attempt at making it easier to configure a 486 board. Nice find!

The 9200SE is AGP 8X, the Radeon 7000 I don't know if it's AGP 8X, but looking at the position of the slots, it looks like an 8X too.

I'm afraid that Radeon started supporting AGP 8x from R300 core (9700 and 9500) and later with RV280 core (9200/9250). Even Radeon 8500, the best chip of R200 core, had no support of AGP 8x, let alone the even earlier Radeon 7000 with RV100 core.

On the other hand, the differences between 4x and 8x in actual games are far less significant than on paper.

Thanks for the info, I had some doubts but now I know that in the Radeon 7000 the AGP is only 4X.
Anyway it's ok because I have cards for PIII and SKT 462, which don't support AGP 8X, I think I'll use it in those PCs, while the other 9200SE would go in other MB type P4 SKT478.

I got these four Plextor PX-760A PATA drives today. One needed a lens cleaning. All work fine and are flashed to the latest RPC1 firmware now. This and the SATA version PX-760SA are the last drives made by Plextor. (The successors were made by various OEMs like Pioneer.)

Question regarding plextors....

I have a 760A too and I was looking for the firmware upgrade (if any) and plextor software to go with it, can you point me in the right direction for them? I installed plextor tools on my windows xp machine but they refused to work, can't remember the version though.

thanks!

I haven't installed the PlexTools Professional right now. I'll check this and write an update, later. Regarding the RPC-1 Firmware I can provide some information:

First of all you'll need the original firmware since it contains an executable for flashing:
https://www.firmwarehq.com/download_229-file_ … 60A107.exe.html

Download the file 760A107.exe and extract it to a folder using 7-Zip. The folder will contain 3 files:
eme_107.bin
PlexFirm.ini
PXFirm3.exe

Download 1_08Xrpc1.bin and copy it to the same folder:
http://www.oocities.org/de/linux_piewie/download/

Edit PlexFirm.ini and change entry FirmwareFileName to 1_08Xrpc1.bin.

Run PXFirm3.exe and flash the drive.

The Firmware 1_08Xrpc1.bin works on the IDE (Plextor PX-760A) and SATA (Plextor PX-760SA) version. I've done this myself and can confirm that it works. (The file name is a little bit misleading, it contains the RPC-1 patched latest firmware 1.07 for Plextor PX-760A and Plextor PX-760SA.)

I tried it, no post. I will try flashing a VLB bios into an eprom and see if anything happens. If I can get it working I'll make another thread for it in the video section.

I'll definitely archive the ROMs, the diskette, and find a way to scan the box.

Very interesting, I never knew such a thing existed. Can it also run games? I don't think the ST has much in the way of proprietary audio video stuff unlike Amiga so it should be relatively easy?

That's a seriously interesting bit of gear, would be great to see some videos of it in action displaying some of what its capable of.
