Has SCART input but no speakers. Will do more testing on retro consoles soon 😁

Hope it takes RGB signal through that Scart port, and not just Video signal.

Took delivery of an MSI MS5169 V4 board today (with K6-2 500 processor).

Unfortunately it had been shipped with the heatsink attached and it broke off during shipping. After a cursory inspection, I don't think there is any other damage. Which is fortunate considering it had a chunky metal heatsink tumbling around on top of it.

I'd like to repair it so that it can still use standard Socket 7 heatsinks. Not sure how to approach that here. Normally for plastics like this, I'd pin it, but I'm concerned about creating a short given its proximity to the board and pins.

Alternatively I suppose I could replace the whole socket.

Damn, that's a nightmare scenario.
For any random Pentium, I'd go with an S-wire instead, but a SS7?
Maybe two component acrylic, but I'd be rather pessimistic. Tell me if you manage...

The frustrating thing is that if they had only shipped it without the heatsink attached, it would have likely been fine.

I think I'm going to go for full socket replacement. My challenge now is finding a donor board to remove a socket from.

Hell, I've been messing around with a soldering iron since I was ten, just not very often or successful. So, I'd probably hang myself.

But, if you're a glutton for punishment, why don't you get a new socket at least:

Fortunately I recently acquired a hot air rework station. This seems like the perfect use case for it. 😁

And thanks for the link, I hadn't come across those yet! Just ordered a pair.

I also order a defective Socket 7 board, since I figure I'll at least want something to practice on before trying this motherboard.

Upgrades for such machines are always expensive. Are you going for old original era stuff, or modern/newly created solutions?

A mix perhaps... I have 3 Amigas 2000 with a mix of vintage and modern (aka retro) addons and that seems optimal approach to me.

Edit: Scratch what I said below - I was thinking of the desoldering station ;D As for the rework station - I have WEP-853D both at home and at work and they are very resonable although temperature control is not the best.

I had one for ~3 years now and they are 'meh'. It requires constant cleaning, even during the rework which is a pain. It's usefully but not as quite effective as the manual desoldering pump. I guess Weller or Hakko would be much better but I can't justify buying it just for hobby (for business use - that's other thing).

I recently got one of these:

Odsysacz_cyny_el_612dee2dd5ed9.jpg

And that seems much more effective and it was dirt cheap.

I got a Quick 861DW. I don't know if I'd consider it 'dirt cheap' but it was reasonably affordable.

It seems to work well enough. So far I've used it to desolder some surface mount aluminum caps on my Korg 05R/W sound modules. I think it would have been near impossible with an iron, but the hot air unit made it quite simple.

Depends on what you're desoldering. For thru-hole, an iron and a pump works fine.

For surface mount, that's where hot air is useful especially when the solder joints aren't easily accessible.

For some reason I read hot air and I thought about desoldering gun instead... I guess I should go to sleep ;D

Well I have WEP-853D rework station (soldering iron/hot air blower/PSU) and yeah - hot air is useful - it's useful even for tht - I usually suck up the solder and then heat up the legs of the chip before pulling it which makes it much easier.

Oh it does, in addition to that, the 2130QM/2730QM also has a DB-9 RGBI input for CGA and such (:

These processors get hot but not hot enough that thermal tape would be unreasonable. I broke the latch on a SS7 as well and this is what I did.

Just make sure that the heatsink is aluminum with a fan so that it doesn't pull too hard on the tape while on its side.

Someone locally in my city is trying to sell a PVM like that for $1000 something. Never understood the cult following they have, but the picture quality is absolutely beautiful with the right cables. Can't deny that!

I bought this "locally" - made a 130km round trip. Seller dropped the price quite a lot since the start of the sale about 6 months ago as he needed to sell it now. So the price was OK in my book 😉 Overall I have around 30 CRT TVs/monitors. But this PVM is the first one. Makes me wonder how it compares to "newer" Sony 50/60Hz CRT TV's.

Should test it with my RGB consoles later today. I don't have any use for CGA tho.

Requests are also possible... /msg kixs

This one arrived just before Easter. I found it while looking for another case from Yeong Yang I owned in the past and immediately had to buy this.

It's an unused Yeong Yang YY-9512 AT Cube Case. At least that's what the original box said. They also call it a "YY-0010 File Serve" in the manual. It has as much space as a big tower, just side by side. The thing is pretty massive and heavy.

Being here in old Europe, I inquired about the shipping costs for those, one lot or more.
Answer came quickly, concise, but unapologetically in tenkalarks and wobbynitts, instead of gram.
Good thing I'm actually that familiar with freedom units by now that I roughly understand it, just not quite past the shaking my head phase. 😉 Working on that.
But seems doable, considering to set me up just in case.

Sweet... Basically a nice monitor then. Does not matter if there is no speakers. You can always use external ones for some machines or consoles.
