Yah, I've seen them go piss yellow, dark yellow even, but this seems to have a more reddish tinge to it, which is why I was questioning it.

edit: also surprising is the LACK of apparent brittlness so far, anything I've had get near this dark, questions on hue aside, has been very crumbly, dull too, but it's shiny and flexible.

editII: Yup, did start totally clear as far as I can see from the thumbnails archive.org captured (full size missing) https://web.archive.org/web/20060427114826/ht … &num=277&pnum=1
I still say it's an atypical shade though, very orangy brown.

I stopped by a thrift store today, and to my shock they had a computer part ! A Lacie USB floppy drive for $3.00. It works fine, though when I tried it on an MVP3 board with Windows 98 it caused a blue screen when it tried to install a driver. I had installed NUSB24 driver, so I installed the NUSB36 driver (the drive is USB 2.0) and it then worked fine. For $3.00 it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I think it doesn't mean Golden Sample here, but GS as a model with NV42 GPU (110nm, 12pp, 5vs). The older NV41 was 130nm and used in the 6800. Both for PCI-E natively - for AGP was needed HSI bridge, natively for AGP was GPU NV40 (130nm, 16pp, 6vs).
But I could be wrong.

now i know why i couldn't get a pic of the underside? maybe the bridge is a weak sell point? but i don't mind as long as it works properly otherwise they can have it back 🤣 i will post a quote when i get a pic of the underside just for grace 😀

I don't want to discourage you from buying, I just corrected the marking of the "GS" label. (I once had a Golden Sample from a Gainward FX5900XT.)
The GF6800GS isn't bad, it just won't unlock pipelines - on the other hand, it has higher clocks than the older NV40 based cards where pipelines could be unlocked. And that radiator on the HSI bridge I think you can see on the picture.

thats ok its not going to be overclocked by me just used as stock I am just happy I got a higher than passive performance unit 😀

I have that one, it was my first/only USB floppy for a decade, worked fine, still works fine, but I have been favoring an IBM model since I got it, seems more solid, I guess in that you don't chase it around the desk trying to push the floppy in and a little quieter.

I have the IBM drive as well, or rather I have 2, slightly different revisions. One of them came with a nylon bag.

I plan to put an Arduino converter board in one of them to be able to read and write Amiga disks. (It is a reversible procedure.)

They also had a Dell USB floppy drive on the shelf that was a bit bigger and I thought about buying it instead, but it was twice the price and there was no guarantee that either of them would work; so I rolled the dice with the cheaper of the two.

Some of the Dell ones are multipurpose and the drive can also be used internally in some Latitude laptops, think the USB part is pulled off somehow, whether the drive mech comes out of the case or it disconnects from the back. .. .. earlier still models had a parallel port variation.

I was searching for a Savage 4 Extreme and finally got this Number Nine SR9. Haven't checked clock and memory speed yet, will bench it against a no name Savage 4 soon.

Seems u got the same card as me, even the memory is the same Samsung SEC. It is interesting that this card have DVI only... Dont like that they did cut the PCB under the DVI... I think this was top of the line Savage chip and the fastest one.

20201218_103840.jpg
Still this card`s quality is very good, compared to this crap for example no name S3 card (or is prob AXLE/ Super/ Shuttle or other garbage brand.)

20200522_160720.jpg

Number Nine on other hand went from creating their own chips, and did become an vendor such as Diamond, Creative ect..
Not that i have any idea how did the original N9 chips perform...

Oh yes this garbage brand Savage4 looks familiar to me 😀 I have a similar one with just 8Mb of ram. The Nr9 looks much more promising. Nr9 cards are rare in germany so unfortunately I haven't got any other Nr9 card so far. Their earlier cards with own chipsets are quite interesting for retrospective I guess.

I own a similar one from NEC and it's quite handy. I use it to transfer soundcard-drivers via floppy from my modern PC to my older systems without USB.

I bought something I highly dislike. Dislike might even be too mild of a word. Hate. I don't really like socket A or decorative leds either so those should absolutely be used to build something in this... thing.

It reminds me of them Presario and Pavilion towers. Full of marketing stickers and handy software bloatware, ready to bring HDD/CPU/RAM to its knees.

Don't forget to toss in an AMR/CNR 56k modem, and while you're at it, let's abuse the MMX extensions to take care of WAN communications. 😉

Picked up a 486 DX2 with battery corrosion for free. Going to clean it with vinegar, baking soda and finally isopropanol and distilled water while I wait for some tools I've ordered. Especially that free floating trace. Haven't had a VLB system since I was a kid so I want to save it, I'm used to soldering micro electronics but I've never had to do this kind of corrosion work so it'll be an interesting project

I like it that you mention distilled water, I never really understand those recommending soaking motherboards in tap water.

I guess it is sometimes ok (at least for a while) but tap water has a varying degree of chloride content, which is corrosive.

I often wash boards with tap water, but I blow it out and rinse it off with IPA after
the amount of distilled water I'd need to properly wash boards would be unreasonable ^^

You could distil your own water. Just evaporate and catch the steam and let it condensate into another container.

I've seen a nifty design where you use the sun and a clear plastic cone to catch the water vapor.

I have to admit, that is one cool case.
